标题: either of sth后的谓语动词用单数还是复数
请问EITHER OF STH后谓语是单数还是复数? I SAW:
Are either of these two things violations of the NAR code?
AND
either of these devices results in more people watching more television
作者: solome 时间: 2003-10-20 08:51
when either \neither \none \any are used as pron. and followed by a plural, they
usually take a singular verb in formal writing.
In speech, however, a plural verb is often used, and this is quite acceptable.

Even though it is the title of an article in American English, there is no evidence to show it is 100% right ?!

either with singular or plural verb. When used as a pronoun, either is normally singular and takes a singular verb: The two surgeons disagree with each other more than either does (not do) with the pathologist. But when either is followed by of and a plural noun, it is often used with a plural verb: Either of the parties have enough support to form a government. As frequent as this usage may be, it is widely regarded as incorrect. Ninety-two percent of the Usage Panel rejected it in an earlier survey.

It is clearly said that even the native speakers have different idea about whehter "either of" should follow plural verb or sigle one. So, in my opinion, this could not be taken as a RULE for eliminating choices.
Hope this helps,

如果用“谓语修饰就近名词?”来解释的话,是不是更好理解呢?
作者: bloveecho 时间: 2006-12-23 11:23
参考如下的解释(From BBC world service)
The quantity determiners any, either, neither and none are sometimes used with a singular verb and sometimes used with a plural verb when they function as the subject of the clause.
Although the singular verb may be formally correct, in usage there is no strong preference for one or the other. So I think you may feel free to choose whichever you think best, depending, perhaps, on how strong you think the idea of plurality is.
Compare the following pairs and see which you prefer:
- I invited four policemen to my wedding but none was present.
- I invited four policemen to my wedding but none were present.
- I have two sisters but neither of them is married.
- I have two sisters but neither of them are married.
- I don't think either of them deserves a husband.
- I don't think either of them deserve a husband.
- I don't think any of the children is invited to the wedding reception.
- I don't think any of the children are invited to the wedding reception.
应该是两种说法都对但是偏好singular,也无意间搜到美国人关于这个问题的讨论,他们大多数不说不清区别,只是大部分认同单数表达
认为复数形式多存在口语中,且如一定要认同PL,他们只喜欢这样的表述:Either the cows or the goats have to go.& Either the elephant or the goats have to go.也正如前某位GG说的类似.
anyway,the singular is better!

说的都不太全。首先,我觉得,either可以作名词,也可以是形容词, 作名词时,either可以作主语也可以作宾语。而作主语时,谓语动词必须用单数,后面常跟一个of .( of 有时也可以省略)
作形容词时,either修饰单数形式的名词,做定语。

Either of和either or是需要分别来看的,适用的规则不同。
either of和none of, each of, any of一样,后面加复数名词的时候,谓语用单数形式。
either A or B则适用的是就近原则,就是看谓语离A近还是B近,谓语形式跟其保持一致。
另外还有一个either + 名词复数的形式,此时谓语用单数形式。
以上内容仅限于书面语表达,口语中也有用相反方式的例子,但是以上规律在GMAT中有效。
各位,我总结的对不对啊?

这段我来总结:
1,either当连词时候,现在已经可以连3个从句了
即:either句子1, or句子2, or句子3.
不一定只能either 句子1, or 句子2.
但是注意either or之间的内容要平行
2, either当代词,用单数
eg. The two left-wing parties disagree with each other more than
either does (not do) with the Right.
2个左派党互相反对的程度,大于他们其中一个反对右派党的程度.
当either + of +复数名词时,很多写法动词用复数,但是,语言使用委员会投票结果显示91%认为不正确(言下之意就是说书面正是文章还是用单数动词吧)
3, either X OR Y 结构当主语时:
如果X,Y都是单数,那么句子动词用单数
如果X,Y都是复数,那么句子动词用复数
如果X,Y一单一复,那么语言使用委员会的投票结果显示,54%赞同就近原则,其余的认为这样的句子应该换种表达方式.
总得来说:
either 当代词, either of +复数名词,都是 动词单数(优先考虑)
either or 结构看XY成分

1,either有4个词性 形容词 代词 副词 连词 形容词 副词不在本文讨论之列
2,either...or... 里边either 是连词 一般这种情况都说采用就近原则 和近主语主谓一致 但是我记得也有几个正好相反的特例 10年前学的已经不记得了 笔记语法书也都在国内 下次碰到再补充
3,either of XX 里边either是代词 肯定是用单数动词 仅仅从意思上讲 它相当于说“某某中的任何一个” 肯定是单数 就像它的counterpart——“both of XX”肯定是复数一样 但是any of XX 单数还是复数 我记得以前学的时候是有疑问的 PS:either of, both of, neither of都是在2个里边选择 逻辑上 明确了both of用复数 剩下两个很容易定性为单数

either of +
名词复数 +
动词单数 因为此处的either为代词,由A OF B结构可知,either才是中心词。

存疑,either做形容词时后面可以接复数名词么?
He could write with either hand.
On either side of the river there are a lot of trees.
那么就不存在 "either作形容词 + 名词复数 + 动词复数" 的情况了吧。

Examples from the Longman Dictionary of Comtemporary English:
He sat in the back of the car with a policeman on either side.
There are shops at either end of the street.
You can get to Edinburgh by train or plane, but either way it's very expensive.

then what is the correct usage?
作者: diegoforever 时间: 2010-8-18 12:01
也就是说
either or 的动词形式符合就近原则
either of + 名词复数 + 动词单数,因为either在这里是代词。 a of b 结构知,either是中心词。
当either作形容词时
either + 名词单数 + 动词单数,这种情况比较常见
either + 名词复数 这种搭配的可行性有待商讨,因此不存在动词的考虑
right?

个人觉得,字典上面的东西没有OG权威,因为很多字典上面查到的用法有时在ETS那里不成立,所以还是查OG比较保险。
在OG12中找到这么几句话:
If either of these advantages were not true, then it is logical to infer that the record would be less useful.
If either, or both, of the statements give(s) sufficient information to solve the problem, select the answer corresponding to the description of which statement(s) give(s) sufficient information to solve the problem.
是不是表示both of the statements give.../ either of the statements gives....,还是说either of the statesments give(s)....这个不知
Neither of the conditions is met.
either one of two cases holds true.
No reason is given to indicate that the inability to reuse the plastic from either type of container
is related to the amount of plastic in either container.
So for an option to be correct it must support either (1) or (2) or both, and provide more such support than the other options.
所以总结如下:
either of 复名+v(复数) 暂定
either one/type of+ 名词 + v(单数)
neither of 复名 +v(单数)
either A or B ,从后不从前,AB平行,形式一致
either A or B or C 结构存在,ABC平行,形式一致

总的原则按这个来,具体问题具体分析,毕竟单复数不是唯一的筛选理由。

同意楼上的观点。
If either of these advantages were not true, then it is logical to infer that the record would be less useful.
这句话并不能说明either of +复名后面需要用v(复数),因为在这句中,were的使用表明这句话是虚拟语气。

我觉得应该有上下文,看either of是强调什么,假如强调两个就用复数,假如强调一个,就用单数。但我觉得一般用单数。
只是个人意见~

参考如下的解释(From BBC world service)
The quantity determiners any, either, neither and none are sometimes used with a singular verb and sometimes used with a plural verb when they function as the subject of the clause.
Although the singular verb may be formally correct, in usage there is no strong preference for one or the other. So I think you may feel free to choose whichever you think best, depending, perhaps, on how strong you think the idea of plurality is.
Compare the following pairs and see which you prefer:
I invited four policemen to my wedding but none was present.
I invited four policemen to my wedding but none were present.
I have two sisters but neither of them is married.
I have two sisters but neither of them are married.
I don't think either of them deserves a husband.
I don't think either of them deserve a husband.
I don't think any of the children is invited to the wedding reception.
I don't think any of the children are invited to the wedding reception.
看楼上说的混了半天~好了,我现在明白了~THX~XD

字典给了个例句。every是强调总体 each是强调个体 所以说这是every后跟复数的原因吧?

Either is used before a singular noun. Use a singular verb after it. (Eg. Either explanation is reasonable.)
Either of is used before a plural noun or pronoun. Informal speech and writing, use a singular verb: (Eg. Has either of them called yet?) In informal speech and writing, you can use a plural verb: (Eg. Have either of them called yet?)
