我进来承认错误
今天早晨赶着去上课，把originality 看成了originally,加上前边有一个was
所以断定答案是D
上课时总觉得不对，结果果然不对
纠正一下
E是正确的是因为画线部分这句话所表明的是一个客观事实，而客观事实要用现在时来表示
所以选E

但是仍想請問若是表示事實,為何lay 不加"S"(originality是不可數名詞不是嗎?)

前边我说的都是放P，现在好好说

Darwin was not the first to advance a theory of evolution; his
tremendous originality lay in the fact that he proposed the idea of
natural selection as the means by which evolution worked.

(A) lay in the fact that he proposed the idea

(B) lay in the fact of his proposing the idea

(C) laid in the fact of his proposing the idea

(D) laid in his proposal

(E) lay in his proposal

这里第二个分句里用的动词是lie, 而不是lay
lie 表示展现，lay 表示放置
所以在一般现在时里，我们通常都说“lie in the fact", 而不是用lay
可是第一个分句里用的是一般过去时，所以第二个分句就要用lie的过去形式--lay
仔细看看lie 和 lay的区别就很明显了
