15. People who have doctorates in the liberal arts are interested in improving their intellects. Companies, however eaewly hire people who are not concerned with the financial gain that can be obtained by hard work in the business world. 找assumption.
(C)The only people not interested in making money in the business world are people who are interested in improving their intellects.
(D) Only people not concerned with making money in the business world are interested in improving their intellects.
答案选D,但有一点题外话想问:Only A is B 与 The only A is B逻辑上有没有区别?
Only A is B means A is exclusive to B. B->A
The only A is B means B is alone in the class of A. A->B
First only is adv
Second is adj.
Check dictionary for their differences.
Again, I am against mechanically categorize "only" and such as neccessary condition indicators as you can see why here.
Actually, 2005-6-LR3-14 tests if one understands only. I bet ETS reads Power Score Logical bible.
14. Political scientist: The economies of a number of
European countries are currently in severe
difficulty. Germany is the only neighboring
country that has the resources to resuscitate these
economies. Therefore, Germany should begin
aiding these economically troubled countries.
Which one of the following principles most helps to
justify the political scientist’s reasoning?
(A) Any nation that alone has an obligation to
economically resuscitate neighboring countries
ought to be the only nation to provide any
economic aid.
(B) Any nation that alone has the capacity to
economically resuscitate neighboring countries
should exercise that capacity.
(C) Any nation that can afford to give economic aid
to just a few other nations ought to aid just
those few.
(D) Only nations that alone have the capacity to
economically resuscitate neighboring countries
should exercise that capacity.
(E) Only nations that can afford to give economic
aid to just a few other nations ought to aid just
those few.
You are right about that. I happen to know some people that scored over 175 in LSAT. They all said they didnt think when they took the test, everything just flew naturally for them. They also said if they had thought, they would run out of time.
Like "the only" and "only", it should click when first read it, if it doesnt click at that time, I dont think one can get it on the test by thinking it over and over and not run out time.
The thing is LSAT changes things around in the test. Mechanical, robotic thinking would causing reversing effect in recent tests. The 90s tests, lot of them had same format. But recent tests, the double questions are gone, Stimuli are shorter, and more of puzzle. More and more it's like a IQ test.
There are several questions on the recent tests read like formal logic question, but you would be banging your heads on the wall if you blindly diagram it without understanding it. LSAT tests logic, not diagraming, so they make the question wordy and hard to diagram. Formal logic questions used to be a chain that is really easy to follow. But now, it gets shuffled and sometimes the elements dont connect at all.
