n 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doing household chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.

A. chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week

B. chores; by 1997 that figure had grown to nearly six hours a week

C. chores, whereas nearly six hours a week were spent in 1997

D. chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a week in 1997

E. chores, that figure growing to nearly six hours a week in 1997

给出的答案是B. 但是B中的过去完成时态用的没有道理,而E中似乎没有什么问题, that figure growing....做独立主格...请大家讨论

独立主格修饰的都是主语吧?那么E中figure修饰children不对...

"到1997年为止,数字已经增长到了BLABLA",很明显,句子作者是站在现在的时间来描述过去.

所以同意用过去完成时.

that figure grow和主句没有从属关系吧，应该是一种并列关系，用连词+分句表达或者分号+句子表达是不是更准确？

在商业英语中，that只能引导非限制性定语从句，前面不能加逗号。

The original senetence is from NY time in 1998, in article "

Children Study Longer and Play Less, a Report Says"

"The 1981 study reported that children spent an average of slightly less
than two and a half hours a week doing household chores. By 1997, the
year the field research was conducted, that figure had grown to nearly
six hours a week."
So B is right. The tense of B is correct: That figure had grwon to ... (since 1981).
