首先that引导宾语从句不可省略排除E。the more 与 increasingly语义重复，排除AD。B两个分句既无逗号又无连词连接，排除。应选C吧。coming closer to town的逻辑主语优先指代主句主语Robert Angus Smith。大家讨论。

后面这句从句的意思是一个人越走近城镇，空气的酸性越大，那里存在什么主谓关系呀？不明白，我看结构中只有a在逻辑上意思明确，且结构完整。

one本身只能做名词或者冠词，在GMAT中是不能够单独用one来指代人或者物的，所以A不对。

還有A有個問題是若是the more...the more的結構的話. 兩句語氣要平衡, 後面the more the city air would... 多了would這個假設語氣有點莫名奇妙.

我认为A is better.
"one" 代表任何人。而不是单独Robert ，所以C is wrong.
因为几乎每个选项都有one， 就不考虑它了。
the more the city air would become increasingly acidic 。
more 与 increasingly 没有冲突， 表示更加强调。

one 是代词，还是不定代词，不能单独做主语或者宾语，再者能用one这种数量词做代词的一定是可数名词，怎么可以指代the chemistry of rain呢？
increasingly = more and more

我觉得是选择B
原因是：
A Robert发表的report说的是一个他认为的事实，不会用wonld come,
要用也是一般过去时。
B 正确答案！
C缺乏明确的主语，你说一个报告的内容能没有明确的主语吗？
D the more 和increasingly 句意重复
E 破碎句子，缺乏动词
个人感觉，语言的本质在于表达内容，用各种结构啊，手法，什么词语啊都是为了将意思表达accurate,所以我觉得B看着不爽但却最清楚表达了意思！

支持B，我开始选的也是A，当时感觉有点别扭，但不知道什么地方的问题。但后来仔细想，A是有问题的。一般我们只说，the more..., the more...，但忽视了the more 后面的部分。
我认为A有两个错误，一个是acidic应该紧跟the more,
另一个错误是would become,
A应该改为the closer...,the more acidic the city air became.

不过我有一点不解，B的两个分句顺序为什么不是反过来？

按照逻辑意思，应该是that the closer one came to town ，the city air became increasingly acidic

其实B是最像正确答案的，可就是这个顺序颠倒了实在难受。。。
是不是美国人对于the more...the more的句型不是那么讲究先后的。。。

做题的时候觉得A不爽。又记得OG阅读女性政治那篇文章离有这么一句话：the diffrence narrowing the longer women had the vote。当时觉得这句话结构特殊就特别记了一下。没想到这里还碰到了。
看到有朋友查到原句，就更坚定B了。OA答案是错的。

支持A：report是对现实做陈述，用现在时，在加上虚拟，所以用would；the more 修饰acidic，increasingly修饰becoming，所以不重复。

一本书上的内容不应该用虚拟语气。起码用陈述语气会更好。
A increasingly 和 more 语义重复。而且 A 最大的问题是 one "裸奔"了。A 里面 one 没有指代，这是不可容忍的错误。
B 里面 one 指代 the city air，“离城市越近的空气酸度越高”，绝对符合逻辑，更解决了 one 的指代问题，也消除了语义上的重复。
而且有原句作证。见 14 楼的贴子。

这题其实很简单 B选项显然是对的：
the more.. the more.. （两个比较级不一定是the more形式 如此题）结构是有逻辑关系在里面的
A选项 （A.that the closer one came to town, the more the city air would become increasingly acidic）给人的感觉是 因为人走到市中心去了 所以空气变酸性了
而B选项（B. that the city air became increasingly acidic the closer one came to town）中，the closer one came to town 是用来修饰 the city air became increasingly acidic的，后者是客观存在的，人走到市中心去只是用形象的手法来表达这个客观事实.

这个题刚开始我做错了，好一个纠结啊，现在想通了，说出来让后来看的人也多个参考吧。天呢，这个争议持续了多少年啊。
首先，Gmat的正确选项不一定是完美的，但一定是最对的。这个题的意思大家都清楚了，主要就是语法。
A.that the closer one came to town, the more the city air would become increasingly acidic（重复，但是是最好的答案了）用了the more, the more的句型：the more you eat, the faster your weight will grow. 三点需要注意：1.虽然说是increasingly多少the more有些重复，但是其它选项的错误太明显了。2.这里的would并不是像大家所说的那样，表示推测，而是will的过去式，与noted的时态对应。3.one代替的是一个人，不是city air。意思就是，当你越靠近城市，城市的空气的酸性就越强，意思完全没有错误。而且，air不能come，它不是动物啊。
B.that the city air became increasingly acidic the closer one came to town。（语法错误）这是我选错的选项，一看多顺眼啊，但是犯了最大的错误：grammar。the city air became increasingly acidic，是一个完整的句子，没有任何的连词，后面又加了一个句子，而且前面的句子没有the more，不能用the more, the more的句型来解释，排除。
C.that coming closer to town, the city air became increasingly acidic（修饰对象错误）你怎么能说air comes closer to town呢？你只能说air that is closer to town，air没长腿的。这个句子要是coming closer to town, one would feel that the city air became increasingly acidic.还说得过去吧。排除。
D.that the more the city air became increasingly acidic, the closer one was to town（因果颠倒）。不是说空气变酸了，人就会里城市近了，而是人近了，空气才变酸了。意思颠倒了，排除。
E.the city air becoming increasingly acidic as one would come closer to town（语法乱七八糟）这是最错的一个选项了，估计没人选。as在这里做什么成分？不管什么成分，这个句子都没有主句，as引导了一个句子，这个不可能是主句，但是前面的句子又没有动词，完全是个无头苍蝇。排除。

真无语，B选项虽然顺，但既不是the more the more结构，后半句像句子又无连词，感觉突兀
