标题: 885 sec 21 -17
Bob Wilber became Sidney Bechet’s student and protégé when he was nineteen and, for a few years in the 1940’s, came as close to being a carbon copy of the jazz virtuoso in performance as anyone has ever come.
(A) as anyone has ever come
(B) as anyone ever had been
(C) as anyone ever had done
(D) that anyone ever did
(E) that anyone ever came
A是如何选出的?这里保留come是合理的了?
作者: sbbi 时间: 2003-10-14 02:43
因为came as close to being...里的CAME和has ever come里的come不同,所以COME要补出.
作者: waterflea 时间: 2003-10-14 11:05
请问这里用has ever done的话是否可以?
作者: sbbi 时间: 2003-10-14 11:10
不行."DONE"没有CONTERPART
MY 2 CENTS

此题解释因为时态不一致所以补come,
在比较句中than或as后补足助动词时一定要前后时态一致吗?
不可以根据句子意思前面是过去时,后面补成完成时吗?
很糊涂???????
比较前后时态不一致却只补助动词的例子。

22. In its most recent approach, the comet Crommelin passed the Earth at about the same distance and in about the same position, some 25 degrees above the horizon, that Halley’s comet will pass the next time it appears.
(A) that Halley’s comet will pass
(B) that Halley’s comet is to be passing
(C) as Halley’s comet
(D) as will Halley’s comet
(E) as Halley’s comet will do

为什么不用过去完成时? 这句话是讲一个过去的事情, 怎么可能用现在完成时?
我觉得 应该用 had ever come.
我觉得has ever come 可能最先就被淘汰。 请大牛举例, 在叙述过去的事情时, 怎可能出现现在完成时?

BW在九岁就开始师从SB并作为他的被监护人,在20世纪40年代的好几年中,他在表演中几乎成为该爵士乐演奏名家第二,迄今为止无人能及。
亮点:
1) the jazz virtuoso就是Sidney Bechet(爵士乐的第一把萨克斯风─“教皇”西德尼·波切特)
2) come close to (doing sth)是习语,表示A: to almost do sth; B: to be as good as someone or sth else
因此,本题单从语法角度,C应该是没错的--even前置虽然没有ETS明确支持,但也不能说反对,至少有此语法现象,表强调;
done和实意动词come一样,作用都实现了;
但是如果从意思上考虑,似乎A就突出了:
1) 如果是强调,这种"前无古人,后无来者"似乎比EVEN更好,
2) 如果用had done,其意思就一般化了,也没有必要用even强调了;
3) 考虑到本题come close to being a carbon copy的修饰方法, 好象还是要和has来比更好;
4) 考虑到本题come词组其实是一种比喻,用come来对应似乎比done修辞上好一点(语法上无所谓).
讨论再讨论!

顶!我也奇怪,17题是因为前后时态不同而要把come补出? 那么22题为什么又可以省略? 是因为22其他几项都错的更厉害吗? 如果这样,前后时态不一致需要将动词补出的说法也是相对的了?!

The correct answer can only be A, B or C because "as ... as ..." should be used. B is incorrect since had been can not be used to substitute came. Now we are looking at the last two, A and C. A is correct because it means "up till now, no one has done it better than Bob Wilber". So there is nothing wrong with the present perfect in this choice. Gramatically C is also correct. But it somehow changes the meaning of the sentence to be "up till some point in the 1940's, no one had done better than Bob Wilber". Overall, A is the best choice.

(B) that Halley’s comet is to be passing
(C) as Halley’s comet
(D) as will Halley’s comet
(E) as Halley’s comet will do

两个句子比较,如果前后的时态不一致,后面一个句子的动词不应该省略动词只用助动词代替,而上面的NO.22 的例子做何解释?我比较了5个选项,认为可以的解释是其他4个选项错的太厉害了。但对于这个比较的知识点却糊涂了,是我弄错了吗?

Don't know where you heard this from but I think you have been misled.This question tests the usage of "the same as" so A and B can be ruled out right away. Among the rest three, only D is correct since it's short for Halley's comet will pass.

我觉得C即使时态对,选项也有问题
as anyone ever had done应为:
as anyone ever had,或
as anyone ever had come.
所以,C可以首先排除。
另,C的错误也可由以下题目的E选项反推:
885-13-22
22. In its most recent approach, the comet Crommelin passed the Earth at about the same distance and in about the same position, some 25 degrees above the horizon, (that Halley’s comet will pass) the next time it appears.

(C) as Halley’s comet
(D) as will Halley’s comet
(E) as Halley’s comet will do

个人以为:
正常我们可以使用原动词(相应时态改变)来进行比较,
如果用do之类的抽象动词代替原动作,如有时态要求,使用助动词或系动词就可以了,不必再重复do,did,done.

关于为什么说这是前无古人的问题,我有一个疑问,原文中说for a few years in the 1940’s 说明他只是辉煌了几年,并没有持续坐在这头把交椅上,imply后来有人比他更好了。因此,他 came as close to being a carbon copy of the jazz virtuoso in performance as anyone has ever come 应该是跟他之前的那些人比,而不是之后的,因此,不用has ever come,而用过去完成时。这是我的理解,请指教。

关于时态,用现在完成时没有问题啊,说明这个状态到现在都没有人超越。当然如果选项中有as anyone as had ever come也是可以对的
很多题目的时态都有迷惑性,感觉明明说的是过去的事情,为什么要用现在完成时呢.其实过去的事件只要有对现在的影响,都是可以用现在完成时的

http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/bob-wilber-became-sidney-t4297.html
(d) and (e) are plainly wrong; "as close..." must be followed up by "as".
(c) also doesn't make any sense, because there's no precedent for "done". specifically, the sentence doesn't use any other form of the verb "to do", so "done" isn't properly parallel to anything.
(a) makes sense: he came as close as anyone has ever come. that's totally parallel. also, the "ever" is inserted in the location that's traditionally considered correct for these sorts of things: between the helping verb and the participle (i.e., between "has" and "come"). i don't think it's unidiomatic to write "ever has come", but that would certainly be more awkward than "has ever come".
in (b), you could probably argue for "had been", in the sense that it means "had been ... as close". so that's ok.
as a tiebreaker, though, the placement of "ever" isn't optimal in this choice; "had ever been" would be better.
--
as another tiebreaker, note that (a) is in the present perfect and (b) is in the past perfect. both of these actually make sense, but they have different interpretations:
* present perfect (as in choice a) means that he came closer than anyone else all the way up to the present day
* past perfect (as in choice b) means that he came closer than anyone else up to his time. the use of the past perfect actually implies that someone has since come closer; in particular, the fact that the present perfect isn't used seems to imply this.
the reason this is a tiebreaker is that you're obliged to preserve the meaning of the original sentence, insofar as it actually makes sense. because the present perfect is a valid interpretation, the past perfect constitutes an unacceptable change of meaning.
