885 SEC C-18(THEN)
18. The owner of Steele’s Grocery in Osage, Ohio, saved $600 monthly on heat during the winter by putting all his refrigerator air compressors together in an insulated compartment, then installing two fans and a duct that carried waste heat from the compressors into the main part of the store.
(A) then installing two fans and a duct that carried
(B) then he installing two fans and a duct that carried
(C) then two fans were installed with a duct that carried
(D) installing two fans, and then carrying through a duct
(E) installing two fans, and a duct carrying
ANSWER A.请问THEN可以做连词么?
but "owner" cannot carry heat

出题者晕了头;
then: ad
First think, then act.
He went home, then (he) went straight to bed.
可从小老师就讲then不是连词,要用"AND THEN",难道GMAT可以?
First think, then act.

hehe...
cited from BRAVEMBA,"为了GMAT,可以流氓"!

1)putting all his refrigerator air compressors together in an insulated compartment。2)then installing two fans and a duct that carried waste heat from the compressors into the main part of the store.

In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property.
(A) setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered
(B) setting free more than the 500 slaves legally considered as
(C) and set free more than 500 slaves, who were legally considered as
(D) and set free more than the 500 slaves who were legally considered
(E) and he set free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered as

og中是这么说的“This sentence requires that the participial phrase setting free... connect to the gerund construction by filing a deed...; it was the filing of a deed that made possible the setting free.... ”

hey, guys, i think A is wrong. who carries waste heat? not the owner, nor the fans, but DUCT. fans and the duct r different apparatus, they can't be together. So choice D is right. by installing ... , installing ... and a duct carrying ... very clear
sorry, i mean, i chose E not D
B is wrong, ‘he installing’
C is wrong, first half active, second half passive, violate parallelism
D is wrong, ‘ and then carrying …waste heat’ – hey, how can the owner carries out waste heat (which is a form of gas)’ (note, in English, who is carrying out the action, who is the subject of the action should be crystal clear)
E is wrong, but I think it’ll be right if the comma is not used, which function as the means by which the owner used to achieve savings, as ‘owner saved $$ by doing …, installing two fans and a duct carrying out heat”,
A is correct, then doesn’t function anything, can be omitted.
it sounds rational that E is not ferfect. however, i am still not convinced to choose A

將 and, or, but, yet, nor, then
Ex: Eric moaned something and then lay still.

Ex: When she recognized Morris she went pale, then blushed.
Ex: He held his hand to direct the water in a spray across his face, then dipped his head and drank.
8.26 then 用在 if 條件句中.
Ex: We were all so patriotic then.
then
I opened the door, then walked out of the room.
If you are tired, then you'd better stay at home.
2.then(那時),當<抽象名詞>。
He stopped smoking from then on.
I haven't seen him since then.

Eric moaned something and then lay still
When she recognized Morris she went pale, then blushed.

used to say what happens next or what you do next
Mix the flour and butter, then add the eggs.

这里我想请教NN一下,逗号和and之间的关系:在托福里,逗号就意味着and,例如a big,fat rat=a big and fat rat
(B) setting free more than the 500 slaves legally considered as
(C) and set free more than 500 slaves, who were legally considered as
(D) and set free more than the 500 slaves who were
legally considered
(E) and he set free the more than 500 slaves who
were legally considered as
This sentence requires that the participial phrase setting free... connect to the gerund construction by filing a deed...; it was the filing of a deed that made possible the setting free .... Choices A and B establish this connection, but only A, the best choice, completes the participial phrase appropriately. In choices B and D the misconstructed phrases set[ting] free more than the 500 slaves ... mistakenly suggest that Carter set free slaves that were not his own. Choices C and D distort meaning by paralleling stunned and set free, as though these were two separate and independent actions. E begins a second independent clause, which--though grammatically acceptable--again distorts the meaning. In choices B, C, and E, considered as is unidiomatic.
