我觉得应该选D项。

B/C/E错误原因比较简单都是因为比较对象不一致。

剩下A项和D项。

A项的错误：ｔｈａｔ没有指代对象，在主句之中，名词只有study,records。

因为that只能指代单数名词，所以只剩下了study.study of earlier works不符合逻辑意思。

Ｄ项的逻辑意思比较合理，earlier works 和B's innvotive study对比。

这句话潜在逻辑说明了，(that of) earlier works relies on the records of the salves themselves.

那么我觉得关键问题在于，works(复数)的具体定义，能否基于records就写出来，还是要基础study才能写出来。

查了webster关于work意思是作品的时候的英文解释：

something that results from a particular manner or method of working, operating, or devising

那么可以看出来， 作品应该是基于某个特定行为或方法而写出来的，而不是基于某样事物写出来的

再查rely on的解释：

longman的解释：

to trust or depend on someone or something to do what you need or expect them to do

既然如此，再查depend on的解释：

if something depends on something else, it is directly affected or decided by that thing

注意，directly affected or decided. 那么作品应该是直接被研究影响，间接被记录影响的。

所以也就是说应该是研究基于记录，而不是作品基于记录...

因此works relies on the records of White slave是欠妥的,而study relies on the records(that只能指代study)更加妥当。

因為works跟study是可比的....study是work的一種...
而study of works就有點怪

我也觉得是D，句子也没读完。看aeoluseros说的怕自己因为没读完句子而找错了平行对象，不过我觉得看完以后还是D...

虽然beatthegmat上说OA是A，可是台湾的一个老师还有太傻的GMAT当家都说是D...所以答案可能还是suspended...
