(A)  if they did not hold it, their grip on Algeria was always insecure

（1） B中的it 指代什么呢？  按语法应指代 their grip, 对吗？
（2） A为什么错？  LZM说语气不够强烈，依据何在？

A，if 后的主句要用将来时WOULD，WAS不对吧
