答案是B，我认为B有歧意，主动宾比较中应该补出助动词来消除歧意。而且后面这个more of a kind of fat让我看着不舒服。

我选C，虽然他看上去不美，不过也比B强。Less和More都是形容词，比B中一个名词一个形容词对称多了。

b有把 fat与livestock进行比较的嫌疑

c的that of加得很古怪。。。变成animals与fat进行比较了。如果have可以省略的话，B可能更好一些吧。。。

这点同意。AND并列的两个是have的宾语，这样就不会有主语的歧意了。

前面的比较livestock后面有(fed on grain)修饰,不加助动词不会有歧义

那个很经典的写比较句型省略的文章上举的例子是

Rice has protein of higher quality than whetat does.

可能这里是没有理由倒装吧.

就算倒装,理解的时候还是要还原的阿.

(个人想法,因为实在是找不到理由省略那个DO了)

补动词在意思上会更好，但是这个句子补上去后反而更怪，不补的话因为只有主词不同，句子也单纯，所以也不会影响到读者对句子的了解，因此不补也是ok的

偶的拙见（有点wordy）这个题是考"比较结构的省略问题"

比较结构有三个结构都是对的：

第一个结构：是正规的平等对称，所有主谓宾齐活儿，没有歧义，是最清楚的一种。

第二个结构：是倒装结构，即本题中的A

第三个结构：是省略结构，即动词或助动词的省略，即本题中的B

二，三比较复杂，也不容易看，具体哪个更好得看每个不同的题，以及比较结构的其它成份（比如定语从句或是就近修饰等都会影响句子结构）比如本题中用省略结构就比较好，如果补出倒装的话，反而不对称了。也许碰的其它的题，可能倒装更对称一些，具体情况具体再看吧。

而且c也比较平行wild animals have ...and have . b 的格式不平行要改成less of ...and more of 才正确。

所以应该选c

我选的C 觉得B的确存在littledou前辈说的情况虽然大家自己都可以判断对于B当中 wild animals跟livestock做比较但是没有do 就是一种effectiveness的错误而且可以作为比较对象不明确的排除依据 C就用that指代消除了这种比较的不足 animal fat vs. livestock fat比较的概念上是十分对等

C错在代词it上，it与that指代的区别在于：it指代同一物，即是原物，而that指代同类的物质，这里在两种物质里的蛋白质肯定不是同物，只能是同一类的，所以要用that而不用it

19题不可省是由于会引起比较对象错位，E中就成了PROTEIN和WHEAT的比较了。

你把第一句没写完：应该是： rice has protein of higher quality than that in wheet;

这样根本不能加do; 因为这里是把大米的蛋白质的质量和小麦蛋白质的质量比较；

如果是: rice has protein of higher quality than wheet does;

这里是比较动词，大米有，小麦也有，但是大米有的比小麦有的要多。有什么呢？高于平常质量的蛋白质。为什么我说高于平常质量的蛋白质，因为我不知道这个蛋白质的标准是怎么定的，所以我就随便说的。明显，这里不是比较两者蛋白质的质量谁高谁低。而是比较谁含有比较多。

再回到原题目的C: that of, that 明显指代fat, 比较野生动物与fat明显不行。

至于B中省略does, 我就不太清楚了。

NY TIMES上的原句和本题相似度不高.已经被大幅度改写了.原句套在not only..but (also)内的----->顺便说一下,用GMAT标准来看,原句的 not only but also 也不平行.

C. wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock fed on grain and have more fat of a kind thought to be

C确实比B清楚,B有两处黄色词组相比的嫌疑(别告诉我说"按照句意不会歧义",SC很多比较题目,按照逻辑,按照句意都不会歧义.比如 i eat apple faster than you,这句也不会歧义,谁不知道句子是在说eat apple啊,谁也不会误会I 在吃you,问题是,现在几个选项摆在这里,有补出的,也有没补出的,ETS摆明就是要烤你补出动词避免歧义了,如果还是坚持"按照逻辑不会歧义"那就不好玩了)

我就题论题，说fat那题。

有前辈选C。理由是：1）do 可以省略的，因为total fat是不可数的，与livestock不属于同一类型名次，不会造成have
livestock的歧义，less不能修饰livestock. 2）AB中的错误在于省略了have,
增加了歧义，可以认为grain和fat并列，也可以认为跟前面have
less fat并列，

但我有不同的看法，我觉得B更好。

B中的and前后不存在歧义。因为即使没有have来暗示并列比较，还有less total fat和more of a kind来暗示两个并列的比较，说明的是fat的量和fat的种类／性质在野生和家养的动物之间比较。我觉得很清楚，没有歧义。

另外，前辈也说do可省略，因为没人会想到把livestock和fat并列起来。那么同样的，grain和a kind of fat就容易让人产生联系了么？况且grain是一般名词，就算可以和fat并列，但也不应该和比较级并列吧？在前面已经有一个比较级的情况下，很容易看出是两个比较的并列。

所以我觉得B如果把do补出，就是best choice。如果没有do，语法上真的会有fat跟livestock比较的歧义。不符合GMAT精工对仗的作风。但是C有更大的不妥。

C的表达不符合GMAT的一贯的比较表达。
这题要么是wild animals跟livestock比较，要么是the fat of wild animals跟the fat of livestock比较。可是wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock, 到底是谁和谁比呢
？

如果是wild animals跟livestock比较，Wild animals have less total fat than do livestock.

如果是the fat of wild animals跟the fat of livestock比较, The total fat of wild animals
is less than that of livestock.

可是C选项的这句话，wild animals have less total fat
than that of livestock, 是把上面第一句的头和第二句的尾搭起来，非常的awkward。

所以，相比之下，B还算说的过去，也算矮子里面的高个了。如果没有typo，我觉得B就是最好的了。

C选项的确是没有问题的，是fat和that of livestock在比较（宾语之间的比较，谓语动词不能补出），但是宾语之间的比较意味着主语相同，也就是说C选项的意思变为：wild animals有两种东东，一个fat，一个fat of livestock，只是wild animals有更少的fat比起fat of livestock来说，C选项的确没有歧义，但是逻辑意思完全错误。（切记分清楚主语比较和宾语比较的形式和逻辑上的区别，它们不仅只是补不补出谓语动词的问题）

上面有朋友说道and more of...成分有可能跟grain并列而引起歧义，我认为不会，原因有二：1，如果more of部分和grain平行的话，应该至少补出介词on，变为sth fed on sth and on sth的结构；2，more of一般用在比较结构中，如果要简单的表示更多种类的...的话，更多地使用more kinds of...。

楼上确定吗……昏啊，这题目绝对牵涉到比较中的重大问题一堆
就是到底一定要明确主语比较还是宾语比较呢，还是没歧义的时候就不用补助动词了
总之助动词就是为了区分主宾的，但在面临不简洁问题的时候，改成宾语是不是到底就万无一失了，如这题的C，还是说不如用B,干脆简洁点，也不歧义？

把句子改简单点。
B) I have 20 more books than you and more of one book thought to be the greatest masterpieces of Shakespeare.
C) I have 20 more books than that of yours and have more of one book thought to be the greatest masterpieces of Shakespeare.
B如果改成
I have 20 more books than you (do || have) and more of one book (are) thought to be the greatest masterpieces of Shakespeare.
这样就毫无疑问选B了。
B的歧义还出现在and后面到底是I have more of one book（做主句的并列宾语）, 还是more of one book（做并列句的主语） are ...
C虽然读起来别扭，但是该有的一个都没少，所以倾向于选C。

NY TIMES上的原句和本题相似度不高.已经被大幅度改写了.原句套在not only..but (also)内的----->顺便说一下,用GMAT标准来看,原句的 not only but also 也不平行.

原题选项:

首先，这个句子3个分句，结构：
Having more protein than wheat does, ..., with more AA essential to....

很显然，中间这个是主句。
后面"with + noun + noun modifier"是典型的absolute phrase结构，somehow modifies前面整个分句，没有问题。
前面"having ..." （前置的v-ing+comma）是present participle phrase acting as a noun modifier.
既然是noun modifier，那么就必须就近修饰noun，也就是说主句的主语， should be something that has more protein，所以主语必须是rice，而不能是protein！这样就排除到只剩下B和E。

还有一种思路是从Comparison结构出发，看前面"... than wheat does"，那么说明肯定是把后面句子的主语和wheat比较，这就决定了后面句子的主语必须是rice。

然后看E，"rice has a protein higher in quality than wheat"
higher in quality是修饰protein的，不能修饰wheat。或者这么看，这句子错误地把protein和wheat比较。
E的表达也比较awkward.....且，"a protein"不对。

这样就得到B了。

补充下，absolute phrase相对比较灵活，只需要SOMEHOW modifies the main clause.
不需要说什么"必须noun=主句主语"之类的

with + noun + noun modifier只要意思清晰就行，GMAT里这种选项如果作为错误选项出现的话，都是因为存在ambiguity。

BY CONTRAST, "v-ing"要求很严格。
前置的"v-ing+ comma" 是作为noun modifier修饰主句的主语
后置的"comma + v-ing“是作为abverbial modifier，要求......（在此省略，给reference吧）

选项分析：

A. they没有指代对象；

B Correct. 是主语部分wild animals 和 livestock fed on grain在比较。在此省略了相同的谓语和宾语（因为不会有wild animals have livestock的歧义，只要逻辑上基本成立，GMAT并不认为所有没有补出谓语动词的形式都是”ambiguities”；"less X and more Y"是 idiom correctly.

C. 在livestock前加上that of…比较的对象是animals has less fat和that，that指代fat，而事实上比较的应该是wild animals和livestock的属性，即拥有fat的多少，所以than后面也应该用平行的句式，即主谓宾形式；

我觉得这道题用这个例子来解释再好不过了。这个例子里面包含了： having more protein -than wheat does 正如本题B里面的 wild animals have less total fat than livestock 所以B是正确的
又包含了 rice has protein of higher quality than that in 正如本题C选项里面的wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock 乍看是一样的实际上大不相同。要是本题C选项换成 wild animals have total fat less than that of livestock 就正确了。就这么一点点的区别。意思上的区别。比较对象的区别。

本题C选项里面是比较HAVE LESS FAT 不能用THAT 相当于是比较主谓宾后面省略主谓

而改成 total fat less than that of livestock 就是在比较宾语了。所以要用THAT 不然就变成了 wild animals have total fat less than livestock。就不MAKE SENSE了个人愚见求指点！！！

又是一个长达7年的讨论么.. prep08-218的补充说明貌似是本版的浓缩版，但是那里面为什么说是未完稿？

我选B，原因如下

1，C.   wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock fed... 我觉得对比的对象没有错，确实是 fat 与 fat of livestock对比，但是从句意上看这2个fat都是归属于wild animals，即animals have both of them
  C补全之后为： wild animals have less total fat than (wild animal have) that of livestock ...
  如 I have more apples than (I have) bananas.
  对于前面提到的protein in rice的问题，我觉得正解B选项可以这样看：
  B. rice has protein (of higher quality than that in)... 括号中内容的为protein的定语，不参与主句SVO结构，所以不会有rice has that in wheat的问题。而本题的C就不一样了，如72楼alicezyk前辈所说：   “wild animals have total fat less than that of livestock 就正确了。就这么一点点的区别。意思上的区别。比较对象的区别。”

2, 关于and前后结构的平行。我同意48楼singdeath前辈的看法：
“B中的and前后不存在歧义。因为即使没有have来暗示并列比较，还有less total fat和more of a kind来暗示两个并列的比较，说明的是fat的量和fat的种类/性质在野生和家养的动物之间比较。我觉得很清楚，没有歧义。”
  完全可以理解成and后面省略谓语have的形式, 即

我的问题是

补出的谓语以倒桩的形式放前面，貌似OG上也出现过类似的句子，那么为什么这里不这么做而是直接省略？把补出的谓语动词倒桩有什么要求么？
2，一个在这个帖子前面出现过的，几乎被所有人都忽略的问题：

C.wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock fed on grain and have more fat of a kind thought to be
这个more of a kind 和 more fat of a kind有什么区别？

我在这里给这个帖子下个结论吧。
实际上根本的误区在于究竟哪些是比较主语还是比较宾语。

Jim ate more than Peter（did）. 毫无疑问这句句子在这里是比较主语。由于没有宾语，不会造成歧义，所以没有必要补出谓语。翻成中文是Jim吃得比Pete吃得多
Jim ate more apples than Peter did. 与上一句句子比较，尽管多出了宾语，仍然不改变比较主语这一本质——即Jim吃得比Peter吃得多。

再来看一句，Jim has more apples than Peter. 相信没有人会理解成Jim有的苹果比Jim有的Peter多（正常人听这句话应该会在Peter后面脑补does）。Jim有得比Peter有得多，这是两个主语之间的比较。

Jim has apples bigger than those of Peter. 与上面两句不同，此句为宾语之间比较。翻成中文应该是Jim有比peter的苹果更大的苹果。显然是两者苹果之间的大小比较。

接下来我们再来看对两个非常经典的具体应用
Wild animals have less total fat than that of livestock.
如果能理解前面所做的铺垫，这里就不难看出此地的比较对象是Wild animal和that（fat）of livestock。显然是不符合逻辑的。
如果硬要改写的话，应该写出Wild animals have total fat less than that of livestock.因为这样改写以后就由主语的比较化为宾语的比较。
而选项B， Wild animals have less total fat than livestock （does）.这样就变成了野生动物和家畜两个主语之间的比较。这里助动词可以不加（选项a倒是加了，但是they没有指代，显然是跑来捣乱的），因为在SC中逻辑错误是优先于歧义的——两害相权取其轻。

Rice has protein of higher quality than that in wheat.而这句话很显然是宾语之间的比较，即rice所有的蛋白质和wheat所有的蛋白质在质量上的比较。
老鸟不难发现GMAC常常使用定语从句比较宾语。即Rice has protein that has higher quality than that in wheat.
同样要改写成主语比较的话Rice has protein of higher quality than wheat（does）.

ps，rice那道题当然也可以以In addtion to doing这里的逻辑主语为线索把答案定在B和D上，但是我在这里谈的还是主语比较以及宾语比较。

Ron: you've learned a lesson here: the gmat's preference for that 'do' is not absolute.

from a 100% strict semantic viewpoint, i agree with you here: there's technically an ambiguity. however, we now have evidence, in the form of this problem, that the gmat doesn't consider ALL of these 'ambiguities' as truly ambiguous. rather, provided that the 'second meaning' is sufficiently absurd AND nonparallel (note the obvious logical nonparallelism of compairing total fat to livestock), it's ok to eliminate the 'do'.

sigh.

remember, we don't make the rules; they do. but with each problem like this one that you study, you'll have a better idea of exactly what their rules are.
