A survey by the National Council of Churches showed that in 1986 there were 20,736 female ministers, almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy, [twice as much as 1977].

A. twice as much as 1977

B. twice as many as 1977

C. double what it was in 1977

D. double the figure for 1977

E. a number double that of 1977

答案是D。

首先排除A,B。

然后C,D中double为谓语动词，不是应该在前头加连词比如and吗？

反而E可以选择，因为double可作形容词，后置修饰 a number。

上面只是我个人想法，恳请指教！谢谢！

if double is a verb, it should be "doubles", so it is not a verb but a adv, in E, double cannot be adj

But in C, D, E, if "double" was really an adv, then 它后头不能跟所谓的宾语吧？刚翻过字典，大概算得上懂了。

C,D中的double是det（限定词，挺少见的），等于twice as much or as many as。直接代进句子中就通了。

我以為D中的double應該是adj，

後面兩句都是用來形容 there were 20,736 female ministers這個主句

如果B改成twice as many as in 1977，也就對了

附註：Longman說，double做adj用時usually before noun

yes, dumble is adj here. In Oxford dictionary, dumble is explained as "twice as many as", perfect here

E is unidiomatic
