OG没有讲得很具体.

Double 是个predeterminer, 当形容词用. 如: We'll need double this amount for eight people.

predeterminer - An adjectival word that can stand before an article, a possessive pronoun, or another determiner, as all in all the flowers or both in both his children.

这里double形容词前置, 修饰the figure. Double the figure则为名词短语, 等于the figure that is doubled. For 1977是介词短语修饰这个名词. 个人认为double the figure for 1977是名词+介词的独立主格. 补全了就是: 20736 is double the figure for 1977.

Double做动词不可能, 一句, 两动词, 没连词, 成了run on sentence.

Double做副词, 修饰showed和were都不通.
