Gas hydrates, chemical compounds of water and natural gas, are increasingly being studied for their potential to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and significant contributors to global warming.

  1. to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and
  2. to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and even as
  3. as huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and
  4. as huge reservoirs of energy, and the possible cause of sea floor instability,
  5. as huge reservoirs of energy, as possible causes of sea floor instability, and even as

answer is A

My answer is E, free for discussion.

the logical organization is completely changed in choice E, but clearly the choice A is quite logical
However, huge reservoirs of energy, possible causes of sea floor instability and significant contributors to global warming are parallel both in grammer structure and in meaning.

I prefer A.

E has 3 problems.

1) Unlike “potential to” in A, “potential as” in E is unidiomatic. provides capital and guidance to minority businesses that have potential to become future suppliers or customers of the sponsoring company. each cell has the potential to develop in a variety of different ways (both sentences are taken from OG)

2) “even”, as an adv., cannot modify “potential”, which is a noun, or "as", which is a prep. Although “even” can be used as an adj, but it means “level”, which is not appropriate in this sentence.

3) Original sentence doesn’t have “even”. An extra “even” indicates that “contributors to global warming” is more audacious than the other 2, changing slightly the meaning of the original.

A is not a perfect answer either, since “possibly causing” is ambiguous. But present participle in the middle of the sentence usually modifies the preceding noun, and, in this case, the noun is “reservoir”.

Generally, to do follows portential.Compared with B,A is better.

Gas hydrates are increasingly being studied for ....

E,as, as ,even as是很平行的结构,但是偶认为E中有一个小错误,既potential和possible causes之间会有redundancy,个人认为应该把possbile给去掉,不知道大家怎么看?

那么possibly causing sea floor instability, and significant contributors to global warming. Gas hudrates are increasingly being sudied for their protential .... 这个过程可能导致sea floor instability, and significant contributors to global warming了。
Most experts believe that ricin would be difficult to use as a weapon of mass
destruction, but do not discount its potential as a weapon of terror.

Potential

Gas hydrates, chemical compounds of water and natural gas, are increasingly being studied for their potential to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and significant contributors to global warming.

possibly causing sea floor instability是进一步说明to be huge reservoirs of energy的,

而且potential as causes  这个说法awkward

而且as,as,as

(Gas hydratespossibly causing sea floor instability, and significant contributors to global warming.,这个意思很通呀~

A,E两者的意思不大一样,A确实没有E好,就是因为那个插入的possibly causing sea floor instability,A的结构是n. being... to be... and (to be)...,两个to be中间加个插入语,虽然从结构上没错,但是对整个句子来说就显得太唐突了,而且容易有歧义(如:究竟是伴随状语还是在修饰主语?)。

平行結構:their potential as…,as…,and even as…

A.    to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and

B.    to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and even as

C.    as huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and

D.    as huge reservoirs of energy, and the possible cause of sea floor instability,

E.     as huge reservoirs of energy, as possible causes of sea floor instability, and even

as

Gas hydrates, chemical compounds of water and natural gas, are increasingly being studied for their potential to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and (to be) significant contributors to global warming

to be... and to be... Gas hydrates, chemical compounds of water and natural gas

而E,

as huge reservoirs of energy, as possible causes of sea floor instability, and even

as significant contributors to global warming

even 这里作 甚至 解,as..., as..., and even as...

Gas hydrates, ... , are increasingly being studied for their (potential to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability), and (significant contributors to global warming).
I spent nearly 20 minutes thinking about the logic relationship between each clauses and finally chose A. But since you guys googled the original article...

Anyways, I do not buy the idea of parallelism as potential as possible causes seems to be repetition. Still prefer A.

Gas hydrates, chemical compounds of water and natural gas, are increasingly being studied for their potential to be huge reservoirs of energy, possibly causing sea floor instability, and significant contributors to global warming.
要么一起放在修饰部分里possibly causing sea floor instability and significantly contributing to global warming.
