i think for old applicant b-schools looks more on ur achievement, ur goal, and the gap in between. like me, no significant achievement up to now, but set up a ambicious goal, finally got dinged even with acceptable G740 and GPA3.9. for young guys, ambition is reasonable because they have time, and energy.... Compared with our Chinese peer, my candidacy is weak!
taking this lesson, i won't apply for the coming yrs due to the cost-benefit concern. i would like to consider it as 一种体验 as HUMMEL says, probably in late 30s.

you should not be discouraged by dinged to some school..here some doors are closed to you..but look at the others..some doors are open to you..do not wait to next year..as you will get one year old...i am same with you..34 this year..and G740..GPA3.0..i want to go to top 5..but dinged by wharton and columbia..i was depressed..but i change the target to Yale..and CMU..I got in....if you are older than 33..better do it sooner than late..unless you will make significant change next year..otherwise..try r2..and check your application package..package is more important than your scores...as far as I feel..
Age is only a number when we talk about our ambition. At the same we've got to understand that it is nature that our energy starts to go down after early 30s.
If a 30's something competes in sport again people in their 20's, most likely he is in great disadvantage.
So the point is older applicants have to have reasonable goals and find the right track to compete after graduation. Say, going back to the industry where you worked before, avoiding high paying sweatshops like IB and consulting, starting you own business in own pace are all good options.
Let's make up a case for discussion. Let's say you have been working in IT for 3 years' programming, 3 year 'technical support, then 3 years' marketing, all together 9 years. You may look too old for some people and some school. Anyhow you went to get an MBA from xxx school. And you come back and find a marketing job in IT sector again. You are now around 33. You work in the same company for 3 years and there comes a vacancy of a marketing director. You've proved yourself with excellent performance and broader perspective because of comprehensive business training. You will mostly likely be among the top candidates. It is quite logical. If ten years later, you are around 43 and the company is in need of a VP or MD. Who will be the best candidate? It is so apparent.
It is interesting to see that people here are always want to make quick fortune and take rocket to get the top jobs.
Old aged applicants have to address the issues of cost-benefit and ROI.
心态年轻就可以了:)。男人40一朵花呢。
25-35读MBA应该都还是可以的吧。:)
高说高有理,低说低有理。
看了之后不知道该从何说起
heihei, don't be discouraged. She also said 40 years old guy is a flower
How did Wharton ask you to apply EMBA? Before they even read your application?

got the same question.
I belong to the aging group.
Well, I didn't have a clear career goal until I reached my late 20s.
It's getting clearer and clearer as my age increases.
I'm well over 30. When i wrote the essays on why MBA and my post MBA career goals, short-term or long-term, I was not making up sensational stories. I just told my true stories.
MBA is only one option. There are options leading to success. Perhaps that's the mind-set of most aging applicants here. We can accept whatever results of the applications, calmly. The Magic 7 means less to us than when we were in 20s. It's sort of dream girls or dream boys mean less to us now than when we were young. Magic 7 are fantastic. Still, it's a very very long way to go even after Magic 7.
Magic 7 represents 7 top business schools in US. I learnt this term last night from a buddy here.

If my memory serves me well, it's Wharton, HBS, Standford, Chicargo, MIT Sloan, Columbia and Kellogy.
Well, I don't know how this term comes. Created by Chinese students, perhaps.......hehehe..... Interesting.....
Don't get discouraged by your age. I am 30+ years old. So so background. Got four offers from the M7's.

hehehe, never......
It's pity I only applied 3 of M7. Not because of lack of confidece.
Which school do you choose to go then? HBS?

no HBS. I think I am really too old for HBS. It's the only one didn't give the interview among the seven.
I applied so many because I really didn't have the confidence at the beginning. None of the people I know with stronger background than mine got into M7. So at the begginning, I planned to to apply 16 schools for the round 1, covering all the so-called top-10. Wasted a lot of money on application and interview traveling.
Hi, boston2007,
I am 36 years old, with very very weak background, that is why I did not have the guts to apply for M7(GMAT and toefl are aslo not good though). but I really admire the effort and result so far in your allpocatiuon.

as long as you have the gut to waste $3000 application fee. I made a budget at $5,000 before I started.
May I know what is M7?

I selected my schools with more considerations of location rather than rankings. My focus is the New England Area for personal reasons. I don't wanna go to Mid-West or Weast Coast. So, I only tried on M3. So far, none of them has give me the interview invitation. I'm all in the Jan round with Magic.
I didn't compare my background with other applicants' when I decided which school to apply.
I applied almost 10 schools. I agree, it's a waste of money. Well, time is worthwhile coz I found the essays I prepared for Jan round are much better than those for Dec round.

So you are in New England Area too? wish we can meet sometime this summer. You mentioned that you applied about 10 schools. Let me guess they are: HBS, MIT, Yale, Cornell( too far away from big city), Tuck, Columbia, NYU. What the rest 3?
May I know what is M7?
Marketing seven?
Magic 7: HBS, Stanford, Wharton, MIT, Kellogg, Chicago and Columbia .
Top three: H/S/W (HBS likes you to have strong family background, Stanford likes young applicants, Wharton likes Chinese)
MIT for applicatns with technology background.
Chicago and Columbia are very good at Finance. (personally think Chicago is better if you want to learn the best finance)
Kellogg is famous for its marketing. Most students go to MC industry. Emphasizing the teamwork.

To be more precise, New England and the neighbouring areas. Take Sloan and Yale out. I began to prepare for applications for 9 schools end of Dec to meet the deadlines in early Jan. You can imagine how tight the schulde was. I had to give up Sloan and Yale as I couldn't meet the deadlines.
I tried HBS, Cornell, Wharton, Columbia, Stern, Tuck (will be dinged soon), Ross (the only one in middle west, farthest one, 11 hours' ride to Boston;interview done, await further notification), Simon (got admission), Smith (to interview), Tepper (to interview), Darden (interview done, await further notification, the most southern one in terms of location, 9 hours' ride to Boston) and BC (the last one, I did want to give up, but my friend told me I should hold on to try coz it's in Boston).
More than 10. It's a waste of money.
I don't like to live in big cities though I've been living in big monster cities since I got my first job.

That's really an interesting group. On the contrary, I seleceted my schools based on ranking, paying no attention to the location. I have spent seven years in Philly and Boston and have no problem to stay in Boston forever. (though the house price is really killing me.). So I picked up: M7, Cornell, Tuck, Yale, NYU, Michigan, Duke. I didn't consider other top-10 schools at west coast. I finished eight schools in first round (include the ED for Columbia) from Oct. 7 to Nov 9 (Cornell as second round). At my age, this year is my first time and last time to apply for business schools.

It's also my first and last time to do with business schools.
Which school are you going to go?
By the way, I'm currently in Beijing. But Boson is my dream city for some reasons.
A curious question, are you past 35?

I didn't decide yet. But will stay in Boston till Sep. 2007 .
No, I am >30 <35 .
The only thing for you to keep in mind is that it's expensive to live in Boston. Let me know if you come to Boston.
