1. You always need a past tense to have a past perfect, to indicate the latter event happened before the former one.  There's no "did" in this sentence.
2. Literatures here ARE oral narratives.  Note: this work consists of both oral literature (narratives) and...

我想问A选项这里是不是省略了thought后面的that,要不然thought和were变成有两个动词了。
