Consumers planning to buy recreational equipment tend to buy higher quality,
more expensive equipment when the economy is strong than when it is
weak. Hill and Dale is a business that sells high-quality, expensive camping
and hiking equipment in Boravia. Although all the signs are that Boravia’s
economy is now entering a period of sustained strength, the managers
of the business do not expect a substantial increase in sales.
Which of the following, if true, would provide the strongest
justification for the managers’ judgment?
A. A significant proportion of Hill and Dale’s sales are made to
customers who enter the store in order to buy one particular
item but, once there, find other items to buy as well.
B. In Boravia when the economy is strong, those who might
otherwise go camping tend to take vacations overseas.
C. The economic upturn is likely to allow Boravia’s nati-
onal parks, where most of the camping and hiking is
done, to receive extra funding to improve their visitor facilities.
D. Advances in materials technology have led to the
development of hiking and camping equipment that
is more comfortable and lightweight than before.
E. Many people in Boravia not only are committed to
preserving the country’s wilderness areas but also
are interested in spending some time in them.
Answer:c
if B is right, no signs will indicate that Boravia’s
economy is now entering a period of sustained strength, 'cause no one will buy their expensive product.
the right answer should be an explanation that this strength of economy won't last long
我觉得b.c都有道理,b说在B地区,经济好转的时候人们更倾向于去国外度假,因而一般规律-经济好转时人们买高价recreational equipment 设备不适用于B地区=>the managers of the business do not expect a substantial increase in sales.
Totally agree !! The anwser should be C.
I thought that people who prefer C might have done some extra assumption
The premise is "consumers planning to buy recreational equipment"
So we must do the reasoning on the basis of that premise.
C is out of scope because the word "visitor facilitie" is too vague
Someone has claimed that C means you do not have to buy euipment because the National Park will offer...
That is the extra conclusion.
Because the visitor facilities do not have any direct link with company's sale
Any extra assumption here is needless.
In other words, if the visitor facilities are improved, maybe will stimulate more people to buy the euipment
So C weaken rather than support the conclusion.
The answer should be B
Don't think too much, this question is not hard.
My personal opinion...open to discuss...
really thx

totally agree
B中 去camping 的人去take vacations overseas 了。

I can't agree more!
我选了B,但是现在想想说不定C更好,B C都可以说明营业额不会增加的原因,但是最好答案只有一个,manager的judgement是do not expect a substantial increase。
I prefer B.
B. In Boravia when the economy is strong, those who might otherwise go camping tend to take vacations overseas. - Even B doesn't metion hiking people, the sales will be affected once if camping people, part of the contribution to the sales decreased.
C. The economic upturn is likely to allow Boravia’s national parks, where most of the camping and hiking is done, to receive extra funding to improve their visitor facilities. - The problem here is that C doesn't tell us whether the visitor facilitaties will include camping and hiking equipment. It is possible that the park receive funding but improve visitor facilities other than camping and hiking equipment.
