懒得新开贴了，借这里说一下，如果这里是考clue后该用什么介词，那肯定是clue to ...

如果这里是考provide的用法，应该是这样：provide sth. for sb.

provide sb. with sth. 意思是提供某人某物，而且这里明显不是这个意思。

不过这里显然都不是考这两个意思，这里就是表目的，提供这个线索是为了... 所以我认为是C

前面有人提到过的they的歧义问题我认为不存在，明显how和when是并列的，所以他们的主语一致优先。

我认这道题不是在考目的。因为discovery of the first authenticated mammal bones in amber的目的性不是很明显。换句话说，这个discovery 不是专门为determining how and when mammals 。。。而做的。它还是强调这个discovery的作用，这一点从could可以看出。

所以还应该选E, 强调discovery 可以为 determining ... 提供某种clue

应该用provide sth for sth (doing sthe)

for + Ving 也是可以表目的指是沒有 to V來的好

不過在簡潔的原則下

仍要以簡潔為主

C雖然用了 to determine可是and when they did其實就是and when they colonized the island of West Indies

的縮寫

明顯的是wordy且unnecessary

所以應該選E

以前做题表目的只要用for doing的全错，正确答案一律用to不定式，结果这题又可以用for doing。

没错E比C更简洁，但是ETS的考题往往有多个考点，当不同考点出现矛盾的时候到底哪个原则应该更优先考虑呢，晕死了

不能教条化。

我也选C了，不过现在想想还是E好些，可能是因为E的逻辑关系比较清楚吧。

原文clues of determining的结构,看出ETS是想表达determine是用来修饰clue的，做clue的定语，而不是用来表目的的。所以C中的to结构可以看做是修改原文的意思，应该舍弃。

但查询了朗文，clue后一般跟的是 clue to/ as to /about + sth. 的结构，所以又怀疑应该是C，但考虑到如果是clue to sth.结构，to 后一定要跟的是名词，则determine一定要用动名词结构，而不能用动词结构。所以C的错误比较明显。

还有下面这个题也有类似现象。C和D争论很大，到现在也没有具体定论。选C的原因是因为to rate表示目的很清晰，天文学家发展了一种刻度是为了定级...。

但我觉得原文给出了暗示，a scale reates the likihood...，说明原文的意思是scale 和 liklihood之间是个主谓关系，因此不是C中的表目的结构。而D中for rating是用来修饰scale，补充说明scale的作用，更符合原文的意思。

此题不选C的另一理由在于 to tetermind how mammals colonized the islands of the West Indies and when they did SO!! Do is a vt. as we all know.

赞同。给出另一类似题。DE之间有争议，答案为D。此题更为单纯，所以对provide sth for doing的讨论更为成熟。一般认为for doing单纯表目的，是对前面名词的补充说明。而to do会有逻辑主语的问题。

bones不能determine
所以要用for

此处要说一下to的用法，当不定时表目的时，句子的主语默认是不定时的主语。---出自曼哈顿。
此句的主语是evidence, 但是evidence不是人，不可能发出clarify这个动作呀。所以E此处是错误的.其次，此处按照划线外句子又必须填入一个作为动词的classify，即classify A and B as...而非the classification of A and B as.....所以BC不对。再次也是最明显的一点，evidence是单数喂，AB肯定都不对，所以只能选D。

to determine的主语是……discovery, 逻辑上讲不通（discovery不能自己发出动作）。搞不懂的同学建议把书manhattan SC翻到P225（CHAPTER 13 infinitive专门讲不定式的），把这页看完，应该能懂了。

问题应该不在to 和 for，两者都可。关键的是rhetorical construction.
OG 说：
“Good Sentence structure avoids constructions that are awkward, wordy, redundant, imprecise,or unclear, even when they are free of grammatical errors”

好吧, 感觉这个解释还是靠谱的. 但是也限定了to do表目的的时候逻辑主语需要是有生命的事物. 或者是能perform这个动作的事物.

两种表达都可以，因次在本题不作为排除的根据。C选项they指代什么呢？mammals 还是islands? 我们不能理所应当认为 they 就是指代mammals.

E 比C 的表达更简洁，更清晰。

这题E更好。
agreement原则。主语是discovery，如果用provide clues to determine, 说明determine是目的，这个目的事件的发出者的主语是句子的主语discovery。在逻辑上不对。

而discovery是可以用来为determin提供clues的。所以用for sth。

另外E也比C简洁。

有人说C后面的they指代有问题。这种说法不恰当。agreement原则中，并列的两个句子指代的位置是对应的，主语they指代主语mamals，不可能指代indies。只是不太简洁而已。
