as far as "amount" vs "number", amount should work with both 可数 and 不可数. However, given that it's "infinite X", number is a match for "inifite" as in Math we often say "finite number", "infinite number". It's awkard to say "infinite amount" as "amount" normally works with "small" "huge" etc.

分析来，amount通常是不可数名词，只有在meaning4中，可以做可数，应该可以解释前面大全那个题，我觉得amount和number一起出现时，肯定是比较一个不可数，一个可数，至于大全那个题，因为the number逻辑上指代有误，所以不选。

这样的结构里comprehend的宾语是infinite number of ...。根据句子开头的意思，infinite number of ... 的动词只能是reduce。C、E都可以有此排除。而 a means of/ for doing 都比较wordy。

个人觉得前者肯定是可数，后者可数不可数都可以。考虑到stimuli是复数，应该都没有问题。
但是句意上， infinite number of是不是不搭配？再说，simuli会用number 来计算么？
还是觉得A好一点。
