"Alternatives" is too broad and general, could mean: better ski suits, safer ski slopes, equip skiers with survival kits, more ski patrol, blah blah blah

E. alternative protections: better ski gear. That won't stop avalanches.

alternative to doing or alternative to do???

for instance

I wanted to go out, but I had no money. I had no alternative to staying at home.

the above sentence is from a dictionary.

so maybe alternative & "alternative way" can not be used in the same way.

alternative ways to protect 指的是way，后面加的不定式

alternative 有名词形式，表示可供选择的办法，感觉应该是加of，或者是to do

你的这句句子和longman上的句子有冲突

一下是longman的解释，做名词

something you can choose to do or use instead of something else
alternative to

I had no alternative but to report him to the police.

似乎你句子也该改成：
