You are correct in pointing out that there is some unclarity in the question you cite. Although the sentence is comprehensible, the phrasing is not as precise as it could be. The statement that "enzymes...are the organism's attempt" is an elliptical,
but technically inexact, way of saying that the enzymes are the means that the organism uses in its attempt to metabolize chemical irritants. We will consider revising or replacing the question in any future editions of the
Guide, and we appreciate your bringing the problem to our attention.
