Q29:

Over the past five years, the price gap between name-brand cereals and less expensive store-brand cereals has become so wide that consumers have been switching increasingly to store brands despite the name brands’ reputation for better quality. To attract these consumers back, several manufacturers of name-brand cereals plan to narrow the price gap between their cereals and store brands to less than what it was five years ago.

To attract these consumers back, several manufacturers of name-brand cereals plan to narrow the price gap between their cereals and store brands to less than what it was five years ago.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously calls into question the likelihood that the manufacturers’ plan will succeed in attracting back a large percentage of consumers who have switched to store brands?

  1. There is no significant difference among manufacturers of name-brand cereals in the prices they charge for their products.

  2. Consumers who have switched to store-brand cereals have generally been satisfied with the quality of those cereals.

  3. Many consumers would never think of switching to store-brand cereals because they believe the name brand cereals to be of better quality.

  4. Because of lower advertising costs, stores are able to offer their own brands of cereals at significantly lower prices than those charged for name-brand cereals.

  5. Total annual sales of cereals—including both name-brand and store-brand cerealshave not increased significantly over the past five years.

原文说:plan to narrow the price gap between their cereals and store brands to less than what it was five years ago.

D: Name-brand will always be more expensive than store-brand, doesn't indicate how much more expensive, doesn't put the plan's feasibility in doubt.
B: Name-brand's reputation for better quality will not matter in the competition => even if the name-brand cereals are only slightly more expensive than the store-brand ones, there's no incentive for the customer to switch

the price gap between name-brand cereals and less expensive store-brand cereals has become so wide that consumers have been switching increasingly to store brands ,后面又说目标是plan to narrow the price gap between their cereals and store brands to less than what it was five years ago,只说到gap的扩大和缩小,没说到具体各自价格数是多少,MM说到doesn't indicate how much more expensive,这已经miss the point了呀.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously calls into question the likelihood that the manufacturers’ plan will succeed in attracting back a large percentage of consumers who have switched to store brands?

D。Because of lower advertising costs, stores are able to offer their own brands of cereals at significantly lower prices than those charged for name-brand cereals.

Because of lower advertising costs, stores are able to

offer their own brands of cereals at significantly lower prices than those charged for name-brand cereals.

2。consumers have been switching increasingly to store brands despite the name brands’ reputation for better quality。

"be able to"并不表示"willing to",所以即使D中能降低更多,也未必会愿意降价.针对题目中要求的"most seriously calls into question the likelihood that", I preper B!

My vote is B. The given differences between the two cereals (name-brand vs store-brand) are in the price and quality. If the quality is not an issue for the customers, as stated in B, the price gap as what was 5 years ago cannot make its objective happen: increase the sales.

D does not touch the core of the reasoning: the hidden assumption in the reasoning is that the original conditions warranting a price gap between the two cereals stay unchanged! B weakens this assumption and hence the original reasoning.

STORES ARE ABLE,  BRAND  UNABLE,   So, D
