标题: "after" and "following"
After gradual declension down to about 39 hours in 1970, the workweek in the United States has steadily increased to the point that the average worker now puts in an estimated 164 extra hours of paid labor a year.

(B) Following a gradual declension down
(C) After gradual declining down
(D) After gradually declining
(E) Following gradually declining

答案是d， 为什么不是E呢？ after后面是不是只能接一个点，而不是一个渐变的过程？

after是介词, following是现分, 有区别啊.

我记得这个题是OG11里的，而且OG11的解释中有明确解释为何选用after，LZ可以去翻阅一下。

这是og11第12题，E的解释是：E   Phrase must be introduced by a preposition(after), not a participle
        (following)。但是令我疑惑的是在朗文字典中对following有介词的释意：after an event or as a result of it
opposite before
Following the president's speech, there will be a few minutes for questions.
Thousands of refugees left the country following the outbreak of civil war.
There will be time for questions following the lecture.
为什么OG在这认为following不是介词而是分词呢？following既然可以作介词，为什么E不对呢？恳请XDJM们帮我解释一下。

 这个不是问题，D也用的是 declining

最让人想不通的是og的解释，“只有介词可以引导短语，分词不能引导短语”，这与我们熟知的语法规则差别很大啊，难道又是gmat 的霸王规则？

至少这个following是会引起争议的，而after不会,改错的标准就是不可以有争议

following 和after同在的时候，老美认为，after是和before对应的，在。。。后；在。。。前

following一般解释为“跟随，紧跟”即follow的分词。

following确实本身有介词的意思，但是D和E共存时，一定选after，没有歧义。
