Which of the following most logically completes the argument??
When people engage in activities that help others ,their brain releases endorphins,
the brain’s natural opiates, which induce in people a feeling of well-being. It has
been suggested that regular release of endorphins increases people’s longevity.
And a statistic on adults who regularly engage in volunteer work helping others
shows that they live longer, on average, than adults who do not volunteer. How-
ever, that statistic would be what we would expect even if volunteering does not
boost longevity, because .
A. in the communities studied, women were much more likely to do regular
volunteer work than men were, and women tend to live longer than men do.
B. the number of young adults who do regular volunteer work is on the increase
C. the feelings of well-being induced by endorphins can, at least for a time, mask
the symptoms of various conditions and diseases, provided the symptoms are
mild.
D. it is rare for a person to keep up a regular schedule of volunteer work through-
out his or her life.
E. Some people find that keeping a commitment to do regular volunteer work
becomes a source of stress in their lives.
Which of the following most logically completes the passage?
Concerned about financial well-being of its elderly citizens, the government of Runagia
decided two years ago to increase by 20 percent the government-provided pension
paid to all Runagians over 65. Inflation in the intervening period has been negligible,
and the increase has been duly received by all eligible Runagians. Nevertheless,
many of them are no better off financially than they were before the increase, in large
part because ________.
A. They rely entirely on the government pension for their income
B. Runagian banks are so inefficient that it can take up to three weeks to cash a pension check
C. They buy goods whose prices tend to rise especially fast in times of inflation
D. The pension was increased when the number of elderly Runagians below the poverty level reached an all-time high
E. In Runagia children typically supplement the income of elderly parents, but only by enough to provide them with a comfortable living
看了这个帖子我觉得楼主误解了2楼的意思,并且举的例子是没有说服力的,the number of young adults who do regular volunteer work is on the increase,你的"因为参加的年轻人少了,参加的都是活得长的,本来就长寿。" In Runagia children typically supplement the income of elderly parents, but only by enough to provide them with a comfortable living,你举的例子是gmat中常见的,就是说一个东西,看似原文没提,但是 typically supplement the income of elderly parents是叫"桥"是他把孩子和原文联系了起来.3楼看了有戏,你得到了逻辑的真传.

However, that statistic would be what we would expect even if volunteering does not boost longevity的意思是:即使volunteering 不能延长寿命,调查结果依然会象我们预期的那样。
However, that statistic would be what we would expect even if volunteering does not boost longevity的意思是:即使volunteering 不能延长寿命,调查结果依然会象我们预期的那样。
It has been suggested that regular release of endorphins increases people’s longevity.
C is correct
However, that statistic would be what we would expect even if volunteering does not boost longevity, because 选C可以解释为 beacuse 以后解释的是volunteering does not boost longevity
.
boost longevity, because
.
选C可以解释为 beacuse 以后解释的是volunteering does not boost longevity
就算because解释的是statistic would be what we would expect
Yes, the correct answer should be A. It follows that even if the volunteering does not BOOST the longevity, those who lives longer do the volunteering work more than others who lives shorter. It retains the conclusion but weaks the conditions supporting that conclusion.
The original reasoning: volunteering work --> live longer, now the conclusion weakens to: not make live longer but those who live longer engage in the volunteering work.
I support for A
even if the endorphins can disguise some symptoms, but the life logitivity will not be changed. So it could not explain the conclusion in the question. it is irrelavent

When people engage in activities that help others ,their brain releases endorphins,
the brain’s natural opiates, which induce in people a feeling of well-being. (背景信息)It has
been suggested that regular release of endorphins increases people’s longevity.(注意suggested暗示,并未被证实)
And a statistic on adults who regularly engage in volunteer work helping others
shows that they live longer, on average, than adults who do not volunteer. How-
ever, that statistic would be what we would expect (even if volunteering does not
boost longevity条件状语), because
.(because应该解释主句,即that statistic would be what we would expect )
what we would expect = adults who regularly engage in volunteer work helping others shows that they live longer, on average, than adults who do not volunteer
以前我一直支持C,但是现在又分析一次,文章要求解释的是statistic(做志愿者的人平均比不做志愿者的人要长)
C: the feelings of well-being induced by endorphins can, at least for a time, mask the symptoms of various conditions and diseases, provided the symptoms are mild.
2:provided the symptoms are mild.

in the communities studied, women tend to live longer than men do,and women were much more likely to do regular volunteer work than men were.
“It has been suggested that regular release of endorphins increases people’s longevity.
And a statistic on adults who regularly engage in volunteer work helping others
shows that they live longer,”
One of advantages for helping others--- endorphins increases people’s longevity
However, that statistic would be what we would expect even if volunteering does not
boost longevity, because .
“However” take another perspective.
“would be what we would expect even if” Which means beside the point, … Think out side of the box???
What if the optimism emotion gaining from helping others can have positive impact on the ailment of the volunteer, thus allow him recover sooner and be healthier and live longer. This comes from different perspective---emotional health---other than physical benefit and thus best complete the passage.
