答案是C，D为什么错？

I think
1. The past perfect tense had to be paired with a past tense to indicate the sequence of events.
2. c is more straightforward, comparing to D.

我觉得，C比D好的可能的理由是：动作的发出者是否确定。C中更准确的表达了scientists学会了人工合成荷尔蒙，而不一定是scientists来remove，而D改变了句意，scientists既学会合成荷尔蒙，而且亲自操刀remove
