First, congrats! To answer your question, what is your background, and what made you want to apply to Strategy?

Well, first of all, you had solid and diverse experiences. It is impressive.
Based on your experiences, I guess at least you have some idea what you
like and what you do not, what is important to you and what is not. In
this fast paced world, it is hard to plan it all out. Most likely you
have a direction and have to go with your gut. On the other hand, if
you know your heart is not in academics, don't do PhD. If you are still
not sure, explore more.
I am not sure what is your age. AFAIK, most PhD in business are in
their late 20s and early 30s. I guess only the lucky few know what they
really want in their early 20s. Most people have to experiment and find
their path in life. It takes time. I myself is an explorer and am not
that young. Time may no longer be on my side, but I am getting wiser
and closer to finding my path in life. Hope the same is true for you.
In short, question yourself, relentlessly, is academia where you
belong, or somewhere else? Evaluate all your options and follow your
heart. Hope this helps.

My background: BA in English from a 2nd tier school in China...three years working experience in Chinese government... A Master degree in policy... One year research experience at Harvard Business School.
My problem is my age. Five years are really a long period of time.
Daxia: Congratulation! I am on the waiting list of Wharton (PhD mamagement), but chance is rare.
多谢~~
也不一定,好像有个印度人在犹豫中

zd, you are welcome.
Seems to me your main frustration came from your boss. Well, there may be 5am-12am professor in Harvard, there may also be 12pm-5pm professor in Boston Univ. Depends on your luck. Actually I am not sure which one is better for your academic career.
Unlike other majors, one good thing about Business PhD program is that you are funded by the school rather than the boss, normally. Most programs claim to allow customized study for PhD students based on their research interests. Which means you may be able to choose your boss.
But making life's choice is less about boss than about yourself. What is your goal? What motivates you? Where do you see yourself fit in? No real career in life is a walk-in-the-park. Only with true motivation and perseverance can one succeed in anything. If you are daunted by the mountains ahead before the journey begins, then perhaps, you are not ready for the journey yet.

其实差不多的,同一个研究方向在不同的学校归到不同的学院而已,反正都是搞研究,只是有些偏向于理论,有些是搞偏向于应用的研究。
