The "it" in c is too far away from "a course of action". In e, "one" follows immediately after "a course of action", "them" and "they" follows right after "signs of incipient trouble", creates a tighter structure overall with no ambiguity.
I don't generally treat the fully underlined sentences any differently than partially underlined sentences. You'd always be looking for the usual, grammatical correctness, clarity, and conciseness.
