usually, top 20 means 23 to 25 schools which have been in the spots by some ranking systems such as BW. The same could apply to top 15 (17 to 18 schools),top 10, top 5 and so on.
For top20 (based on consistency in BW), Emory should not be a firm one since it has been ranked only 3 times (28th, 22nd, 20th).I am simply talking about the numbers here.Purdue has been with top20-30 spots for five times, and it's not a top20 either (but 20th once). Indiana, however, has been always (except in 1998) ranked among top20, at least by BW.Yale's rankings has not been consistent either, but four times among top20, and it's reputation is just too strong to ingore, right? Don't forget that Wash U. also has been among top20 three times.Vanderbilt's been there once, Rochester twice, and this can go on an on, not to even mention other rankings, hehe.
Thank you guys nice input info!
DING! Wish more water here!
top20 is more a term rather than the real ranking. Usually it represents the traditionally strong schools. The real ranking could be different every year. I knew at one year, UC Berkeley fell out top 20 in ranking, but it is still considered the top 20 schools. So if you rely on BW or USNEWS ranking, the top 15 usually are a safe bet, but don't put too much weight on schools at the bottom of the list. |
The above precious comment is from a professional bull in CD. I didn't put his name here just considering any possible dispute on this topic. Just want to share with anyone who has the interest. That's all.
