我选b:　than born
其他的是than them 呀什么的5个答案就是没有我想选的：THAN THOSE WHO WERE BORN TO MOTHERS UNDER 30.所以我只好选b

(版本3)语法头一题就是than under it 那道选a 我肯定
more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than under it. than画线 than (babies were born to women ) under it

(版本4)children were born by women under thirty more than ...over thirty. 一个比较

"under it"指"the age of thirty"太牵强了把

"use" is a verb that always has an object.
use+object+to infinitive:You can use the palette knife to apply paint directly to the canvas.

These lights are used for illuminating the playing area. = We use these lights for
illuminating the playing area.

天山’s remark: 个人认为是选to use in plce of ，如果用replace，则replace的逻辑主语指代不清，好象是学生，其实逻辑主语应该是governemt. 另外，ETS在og的注释中频繁用到use..in place of ,而从未用过use...to repalce.

12、我倾向于THAN BORN，因为THAN UNDER IT有歧义，如果IT是指代30岁的话，那么这句话也可以理解为，“更多的孩子是由30岁以上的妇女生的，比起低于30岁的孩子来说”，或者也可以理解为，“更多的孩子是由30岁以上的妇女生的，比起在30岁以下的出生的孩子来说”，虽然荒谬，但的确有这个含义。而尽管THAN BORN不是很好的答案，但是它至少避免了这些歧义。

6、to use in place of. 天山说的很有道理，有OG解释为证
“A and B use so unidiomatically in place of ....”

13、同意1）WHO WORK强调的是一种特定的、具体的事实，而ranging from这里强调的是一种规律性的、客观的或者说默认的事实。

(版本2) i prefer " than them" and i feel mother should be mothers.
(版本3) yes. than under it.
(版本4)yes.

这题的第一个版本是我原来写的. 考试时主要考虑的是:

1) 比较的省略不能一节一节省. 比如说, ... (than born) over it. 在born和over it 中省略了 to mothers. 那么引起的歧义就是 "更多的孩子是由30岁以上的妇女生的，比起在30岁以下的出生的孩子来说”.

2) ... (than them) ... : 这个them 指代不清晰, babies or mothers.

3) under it: 从意思理解, 是指under the age of 30. 而且under it是在划线外.

其它选项都有1或2的毛病.

选项1) ... over the age of 30 (than) under it. 省略了born to mothers, 直接拿两个介词短语比较非常清楚简洁.

这道题出现4次, 3次是第一题位置, 相当重要啊!

1) 划线部分是(than...) under it. 我选的答案1)是than. 其它选项是加了些成分在里面.
2) under it 是在划线外, 从4个版本看这点是统一的.
3) 我记得是under it,因为当初还考虑了一下it的指代.

我的建议是, 做这道题还是抓住比较的省略和代词指代, 考场上其它答案就能排除掉.

如果是 ... than to them,肯定是指mothers. 但逻辑上意思改变了. them是指同一批人, 整句话理解下来就是, 这些妈妈们, 30 岁后生的小孩多于30岁前生的. 比较合理的代词应用to those, 会更好.

如果是 ... than them, 就是指代不清.

版本2里面是没有to 的

我也觉得1）好：
A．who work…从句比working…短语好，不过要是在考场上遇到这个题目还是要看一下主句的时态是否与从句的相匹配。

14题之所以用从句而非现在分词是因为：
A．    如果用分词修饰，这个修饰成份太长了，而且中间还有插入成份。使句子显得头轻脚重；
B．    that从句中动词可以更加明确地表示从句是修饰paintings而非evident。
