我先提问题先
语法补充中的老题
section A
5. With its abundance of noun inflections, Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when translated into English.(A) is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when translated into English
(B) are compact when they are written, but they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English
(C) is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when being translated into English
(D) are compact when written but can lengthen considerably in English translation
(E) is compact when it is written but can lengthen considerably when translated in English
答案选D
可是我记得GMAT家规中有一条,A OF B的主语是A,那这里为什么用are compact
而且D中前后似乎结构不统一的么

13. In spite of continuing national trends toward increased consumption of specialty foods, agronomists in the Midwest foresee a gradual reversion to the raising of agricultural staples: feed corn and hard red wheat.
(A) a gradual reversion to the raising of agricultural staples
(B) that a gradual reversion back will feature the raising of agricultural staples
(C) a gradual reversion back to the raising of agricultural staples again
(D) a gradual reversion to raise agricultural staples
(E) a gradual reversion into the raising of agricultural staples
这里为什么用A
D不是更简洁吗
作者: anchoret 时间: 2003-9-17 12:26
13 reversion to +名词,转变到什么状态
a和d的意思不同
5 one是一个不定代词,that的先行词不会是一个不定的概念。
one of ....that 修饰of 后面的东西
the one of ....that 修饰整个of结构
作者: luoyx 时间: 2003-9-17 12:36
1)
one of + 复数的谓语用复数。
the only one of +复数的谓语用单数。
2)
reversion to 后跟名词。

先报个到
885-Sec E
11. The man was always aware, sometimes proudly and sometimes resentfully, that he was a small-town Midwesterner who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him.
(A) who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him
(B) who had been thrust into a world that was dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him
(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was
(D) thrust into a world dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him
(E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he
E中为何用HE不用HIM? 我觉得换成HIM好。 (其他选项有明显错, 只剩E了。)
作者: precious 时间: 2003-9-17 15:18
是否可理解为“wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people ”是dominate动作的发出者,虽然做by的宾语,但实际上是主格,故than后面的比较对象用he而不用him
作者: eyesy 时间: 2003-9-17 15:24
这句是PEOPLE 和 HE的比较,都是主格,未涉及宾格
作者: joice 时间: 2003-9-18 03:00

还有一题 885 Sec 1
12. Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only with an Edison phonograph and insatiable curiosity.
(A) Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only
(B) In 1905, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, traveling the back roads of Hungary, began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were only armed
(C) In 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only
(D) Having traveled the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology; they were only armed
(E) Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, in 1905 began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary, arming themselves only
答案是C。在A和C之间徘徊, 觉得哪个也不完美。A中的Traveling的位置不好, C中traveling ... Hungary armed 有点碍眼, 总觉得象修饰Hungary。 哪位帮我分析一下? thx

此题C好
因为当选项中有时间状语时
一般时间状语应该放在名词之前,或者是动词之后
A中1905的位置,看上去不舒服
而aimed~~~是分词短语做目的状语,表明他们的travel是为了干吗

10. For many people, household labor remains demanding even if able to afford household appliances their grandparents would find a miracle.
(A) even if able to afford household appliances their grandparents would find a miracle
(B) despite being able to afford household appliances their grandparents would find a miracle
(C) even if they can afford household appliances their grandparents would have found miraculous
(D) although they could afford household appliances their grandparents would find miraculous
(E) even if they are able to afford household appliances which would have been a miracle to their grandparents
答案是C。为什么用would have found ? 读起来挺顺的, 但不理解。我选成了D。 望指教, thx
作者: wikeypig 时间: 2003-9-18 18:28
could表过去时,和主句时态不符。其它是be able to ,can的区别。

集中问几个问题:
1)补充材料sc202题,答案d选项我觉得也有问题,应该是development of jumbo rocket才能carry us into its next phase of space exploration,而不应该是jumbo rocket.还有就是句尾的and at a lower cost可以这样用吗?不太理解!
补充材料sc205题,unlike atomoci ........ 这样放在句尾的话,不会造成它和the nuclei of atoms对比的歧义吗?
2)og上204题,d选项为什么不对,为什么steers不是acquire的agent?我觉得从意思上可以成立?
require of sb to do sth是错的吧?
og上167题,为什么用复数的neanderthals与an ape进行比较呢?应该是单复数相同才能比较,对否?
作者: merlion 时间: 2003-9-19 14:42
og 176 Neanderthals 的 vocal tract 和ape's 比, 不是Neanderthals 和ape比
require sb to do sth 是OG认可的

你是电子版的吗
作者: light 时间: 2003-9-19 14:53
og204,句意上来说,steers 自己无法去acquire certain characteristics,
从文法上来说,因为未画线部分出现一个关键词,use, use st. to …..
Require (of) 人 to V原形, of可以选择省略,但不是一定要这么做.

还有一个问题就是比如说一个句子中有2个复数名词,后面有一个them,这时应如何判断从语法上它是修饰哪个名词,因为虽然能从句意上推出,但是不知语法上对否,所以不确定到底是否要修改。

我的问题是unlike atomoci ........ 这样放在句尾的话,不会造成它和the nuclei of atoms对比的歧义吗?
202题答案是A newly developed jumbo rocket, which is expected to carry the US into its next phase of space exploration ,will be able to deliver a heavier load of instruments into orbit than the space shutle can ,and at a lower cost.

语法题中很多都是要靠意思来判断的
决大多数的题目靠的是并列
前后主谓一致其实也是种并列的方式
因而靠意思判断才是一种绝佳的方法
没有真正的语法点可循的
因为答案是比出来的,不是选出来的

109和181对require 的解释前后矛盾
109. Legislation in the Canadian province of Ontario
requires of both public and private employers that pay
be the same for jobs historically held by women as for
jobs requiring comparable skill that are usually held by men.
(A) that pay be the same for jobs historically held by women as for jobs requiring comparable skill that are
(B) that pay for jobs historically held by women should be the same as for a job requiring comparable skills
(C) to pay the same in jobs historically held by women as in jobs of comparable skill that are
(D) to pay the same regardless of whether a job was historically held by women or is one demanding comparable skills
(E) to pay as much for jobs historically held by women as for a job demanding comparable skills
Choice A is best. In choice B, should is illogical after requires, or at
least unnecessary, and so is better omitted; in choices B and E, job
does not agree in number with jobs; and in choices B, D, and E, the
wording illogically describes the comparable skills rather than the
jobs as being "usually held by men." Choices C, D, and E produce the
ungrammatical construction requires of... employers to pay, in which
of makes the phrase incorrect. In C, the use of in rather than for is
unidiomatic, and jobs of comparable skill confusedly suggests that the
jobs rather than the workers possess the skills. In D, the phrase
beginning regardless ... is awkward and wordy in addition to being
illogical.
181. Because of the enormous research and
development expenditures required to survive in the electronics
industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand,
such firms tend to be very large.
(A) to survive
(B) of firms to survive
(C) for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms' survival
The subject of the main clause (such firms) presumes a prior reference
to the firms in question. Furthermore, the logical subject of to
survive and the logical complement of required should be made explicit.
All three demands are met by B, the best choice. Choices A, C, and D,
with no reference to the firms in question, meet none of these
demands. In choice E, the illogical and awkward use of a prepositional
phrase (for firms' survival) buries the needed initial reference to
firms in a possessive modifier.
109和181对require 的解释前后矛盾,不知我是不是看错了,请明示。另外og 181的required of firm to survive如要变成定语从句前面的先行词expenditures放在句中什么位置。

demonstrate adaptive equipment that allows visually impaired people to use computers.
(A) one who
(B) one of them who
(C) and one of them who
(D) one of whom
(E) one of which
The subject, presenters, must be followed by a limiting appositive _ such as one of whom, that identifies an individual from among a larger group. Choice D is best: one of whom best serves an appositive to the subject, presenters, because the phrase means "one from among several or many." Choice A, one who, is unacceptable because one who cannot refer to the plural presenters. Choices B and C are ungrammatical because who competes with one as the subject of is. Choice E employs which, a relative pronoun that does not refer to people (presenters), but only to things.

没有前后矛盾啊
109中,requiring that 是分词短语,修饰JOB
而181中,require of sb to do sth
这里加上FIRMS这个逻辑主语,是为了更清楚的表示,和后面的such firms对应啊
不然,后面的这个such firms 就显的太突兀了

demonstrate adaptive equipment that allows visually impaired people to use computers.
(A) one who
(B) one of them who
(C) and one of them who
(D) one of whom
(E) one of which
The subject, presenters, must be followed by a limiting appositive _ such as one of whom, that identifies an individual from among a larger group. Choice D is best: one of whom best serves an appositive to the subject, presenters, because the phrase means "one from among several or many." Choice A, one who, is unacceptable because one who cannot refer to the plural presenters. Choices B and C are ungrammatical because who competes with one as the subject of is. Choice E employs which, a relative pronoun that does not refer to people (presenters), but only to things.

A) little water or services exist
B) little water or services exists
c) few services and little water exists
D) there is little water or services available
E) there are few services and little available water
key E. explaination from og:
----A, B, D, are incorrect because ' little' cannot properly modify 'services'.( agree)
Also, since water and sevices are being discussed as a pair, they should logically be treated as a compound subject requiring a plural verb; thus, B,C, and D are wrong.
E is best: the plural verb are is used, and few correctly modifies services.
My question:
If in choice C, use plural verb exist:
little water and few services exist, will it be right or better than E?
Thanks a lot.
作者: braveMBA 时间: 2003-9-24 11:39
yes , I agree. But, better? No sense, both are correct. I think, this kind of situation would not occur during the test, or we would be crazy! Must I choose, I will have to choose C, because there are fewer words in the sentence, one of rules suggested by KAPLAN, but I dare not use it at all.
作者: joice 时间: 2003-9-24 12:35
" little' &" few" make the question complecated. If the clause is just a regular one ( no few & little), I won't consider " There are tables and chairs are --". " there are" is really unnecessary.
One thing i am not sure is :
little modifies singular verb and few modifies plural verb. when they function as a compound subject, verb agree with " llittle' or 'few"?
My opinion is :
little --- and few --- are--- , but not: few -- and little --- is ---
