what is wrong with E? 是没有"great quantities"的用法,还是"quantities of "不能修饰人?

这个题目考得太微妙了。非常有代表性地反映了GMAT句子改错答案“是比较出来的：要么是矮子中拔将军，要么是美男中选帅哥”的思想（其实逻辑、阅读又何尝不是如此啊？！）。这个题目就是在美男中选帅哥（或者“美男中选安哥”）。
首先，有“great quantities”的用法，而且还有“vast quantities”的用法，而且“quantities of”可以修饰可数名词，也可修饰不可数名词。请见下面WM的解释及改错及阅读中出现的无数例子。
quantity：
1 a: an indefinite amount or number b: a determinate or estimated amount c: total amount or number d: a considerable amount or number often used in plural “generous quantities of luck H. E. Putsch”

其次，那么为何选C而不是E呢？我认为有两点原因：其一，quantities of虽然可以修饰可数名词，但在修饰可数名词时显然没有great numbers of好，因为great numbers of的意思单一，不会引起误解（这也是C比A好的原因）；其二，问题主要出在both rich and poor，因为它不等于rich and poor alike。这里的alike明显是副词，作EQUALLY讲，并非形容词。请见下面WM的解释和例句：
alike: adverb: in the same manner, form, or degree: EQUALLY “was denounced by teachers and students alike”
总之，这个题目中的优先级是C＞A＞E＞B，D
其中C是安哥，B，D算不上美男，是恶少。

比较下面的两个句子：
我与安哥都帅。
我与安哥一样帅。
当然不一样啦。
其实BOTH AND所能表达的意思只是AND,不能表达出EQUALLY。

对，是不一样，但是具体到这道题，似乎影响不大，两者都可以用。

infected both rich and poor丢失了原句子中EQUALLY的意思。
的确infected both rich and poor是能讲得通，所以说E也是美男啊。

5年后偶来尝试解释一下.
这题说富人在投机泡沫覆灭时受到波及, 而穷人在这一事件中也和富人一样未能幸免; 因为太容易申请到贷款(杠杆仅为10%), 无数人的credit line过渡的被使用.

仔细体会这句话, 深沉含意说的是不仅富人能够申请到贷款, 连以往不够资格申请贷款的穷人现在也能申请到, the fact导致vast quantities of people were dangerously overextended.可见, 穷人是产生巨大数量的人的原因. 如果用both and, 穷人和富人在事件中的影响就在一个Level上.正确答案中的poor alike是在强调穷人的作用.

都2011了，还是贴一个百度知道的，
只能修饰可数名词的：a large/ great/ good number of, a good/ great many, dozens of, scores of, quite a few
只能修饰不可数名词的：a great deal of, a large amount of, quite a little,a large sum of
既可修饰可数也可修饰不可数名词的：plenty of, a lot of, lots of, a large quantity of, a good supply of

quantities和amount应该是不能修饰living things的。

赞同以意取胜。

GMAT的语法题目首先是A选项的意思要尽量保留，在此基础上选择语法没问题的。这是bottom line，否则随便改一个意思都可以的话，句子就随便写了。
