56. In a plan to stop the erosion of East Coast beaches, the Army Corps of Engineers proposed building parallel to shore a breakwater of rocks that would rise six feet above the waterline and act as a buffer, so that it absorbs the energy of crashing waves and protecting the beaches.
(A) act as a buffer, so that it absorbs
(B) act like a buffer so as to absorb
(C) act as a buffer, absorbing
(D) acting as a buffer, absorbing
(E) acting like a buffer, absorb
选C?
C
1.搭配:act like: to behave orcomport oneself and descriges the action of a person
act as: describes the function of a thing
2.平行:absorbing...and protecting...
“proposed building parallel to shore a breakwater of rocks”中,结构是怎么分析的呢?
我的观点是,“parallel to shore”前置了,因为“a breakwater of rocks"后面要接that引导的定语从句。 但我查过longman字典,propose是及物动词,只有propose to do的用法,没提可以propose doing。
我觉得是把长宾语a breakwater of rocks that ...后置
absorbing...and protecting...
absorbing...and protecting...
我记得有一种说法是 A of B that, 这里that就近修饰B,后面的absorbing进行时优先修饰主句,也就是rocks (如果that是修饰rocks的话)

The following explanation form LONGMAN
【SUGGEST】
[T]
formal to suggest something as a plan or course of action
→proposal
the changes currently proposed by the local planning authorities
the proposed budget cuts
propose that
In his speech he proposed that the UN should set up an emergency centre for the environment.
propose doing sth
The report also proposes extending the motorway.
【INTEND】
[T]
formal to intend to do something
propose to do sth
How does he propose to deal with the situation?
propose doing sth
We still don't know how the company proposes raising the money.
my question is what is difference between propose to do and propose doing ??
同意parallel to shore前置了,正常语序为proposed building a breakwater of rocks
(that)parallel to shore
open to discuss!!

同意parallel to shore前置了,正常语序为proposed building a breakwater of rocks
(that)parallel to shore
open to discuss!!
parrallel to shore并非省略了that并的定语从句,否则会加s为parallels(先行词breakwater单数),此处parallel为形容词,见longman:parallel
1
two lines, paths etc that are parallel to each other are the same distance apart along their whole length
Lines AB and CD are parallel. two parallel roads
parallel to
She was travelling parallel to her previous route.
parallel with
The railway is parallel with the canal.

问(A)里面so that前面加逗号,对么?
absorbing , protecting 被 that would rise six feet above the waterline and act as a buffer 分开, 其实是修饰 breakwater...
Engineers proposed building a breakwater of rocks (that...), obsorbing the energy of crashing waves and protecting the beaches.
I think "-ing"s, absorbing and pretecting was clearly describing about "buffer"
This is exactly what buffer means.
