24-8 The results of the company’s cost-cutting measures are evident in its profits, which increased five percent during the first three months of this year after it fell over the last two years.



A) which increased five percent during the first three months of this year after it fell:  After it fell wrong , it single, profits pronoun


(B) which had increased five percent during the first three months of this year after it had fallen


(C) which have increased five percent during the first three months of this year after falling


(D) with a five percent increase during the first three months of this year after falling


(E) with a five percent increase during the first three months of this year after having fallen



看了不少帖子讲with 的错误，我还想再次更正一下对with做修饰和伴随时的理解，请大家再帮我指点一下



这里答案是c,很明显。which做，非限制性定于从句修饰profits.D中用了，with. 请问这里with会产生什么歧义？ 是不是修饰名词和作动词伴随成分的歧义？ 如果修饰名词的时候是不是应该这接跟名词不能用" ,"隔开。如果用了'',"在这里很容易产生做伴随状语的歧义？请教。


同时贴出我问的另外一题，carolhide MM 给了很好的解释，


On account of a law passed in 1993, making it a crime punishable by imprisonment that a United States citizen hold gold in the form of bullion or coins, immigrants found that on arrival in the United States they had to surrender all of the gold they had brought with them.>>

我觉得，首先，这题不存在因果关系，并不是因为这个法律的通过，所以移民者才发现，而应该是伴随状态，随着这个法律的通过，移民者发现，所以on account of , because of 和due to都不对，A，D，E排除。


然后看C，两个独立结构的句子没有连词，所以错误。


最后看B，with是ETS不太喜欢用的词，因为with容易造成歧义，是修饰就近的名词还是整个句子。但是with放在句首，就不会造成歧义，这也是ETS排除歧义修饰的惯用手段。

hehe, Zenger, your example is definitely unnecessarily wordy.

I want to buy some food, or I did grocery shopping.

I have not insterested in persenting my idea on GWD or JJ questions, so I only want to point out one thing.

It might be a good approach to generalizing "rules", but don't use them rigidly.

the example ‘ with Xiao ming ' is very easy to understand.
