    For C, what part does "used to test" and "studied to gain" form parallelism? C looks awkward.

    C应该是be directed，be used和be studied平行。

    But in original sentence, may is used before studied, why we can choose C which doesn't have may, will it change the basic meaning?

    支持楼上。我觉得A显然是不对的。use和study不可能和hope并列，从逻辑上说不通。

    may可以省略是因为句子一开始就说Doctors “hope”。

    在英文中用hope表达的内容  其实已经隐含了may的意思。
