Q14:

Whereas lines of competition are clearly defined in the more established industries, in the Internet industry they are blurred and indistinct, as companies that compete one day may be partners the next.

  • Whereas lines of competition are clearly defined in the more established industries, in the Internet industry they are blurred and indistinct, as companies that compete

  • Although the lines of competition are clearly defined in industries that are more established, they are blurred and indistinct in the Internet industry, as competing companies

  • The lines of competition are clearly defined in the more established industries, unlike the Internet where they are blurred and indistinct, as companies that compete

  • Unlike more established industries, where the lines of competition are clearly defined, they are burred and indistinct in the Internet industry, as companies that compete

  • Unlike more established industries, with clearly defined lines of competition, those of the Internet industry are blurred and indistinct, as competing companies

  • 徘徊在A,B之间,答案给的是B,可我觉得industries that are more established不如the more established industries来得好;但是A里面的as companies that compete也不好,该怎么取舍呢?

考虑结构:...lines of competition are..., they are...

    A中,逗号接着in the Internet...they are...,不好。

    Thanks again~

Look at A:  Whereas lines of competition are clearly defined in the more established industries, in the Internet industry they are blurred and indistinct, as companies that compete one day may be partners the next.

I think it is really a problem of modifier place , but of "one day" not of "in the Internet industry". The only flaw of A, in my view, is that the "one day" will be easilly supposed to modify "compete". However, in fact, the author meaningly uses "one day" to modify "may be". It is not logiclly correct to suppose that "one day" is used to modify "compete" because, tesified by common sense, the competing status of companies should not  just last "one day" but a relative long time.

one day是一个adv. 而不是名词,所以A中的that compete one day是说的过去,但是B中的competing companies one day就不对了。

    A中的lines为泛指,泛指的可以用a/ an + 名词或者是名词(单数for不可数),名词(Pl. for 可数)来表示,B中的the lines为特指。

used to say that although something is true of one thing, it is not true of another:
The old system was fairly complicated whereas the new system is really very simple.

Whereas the city spent over $1 billion on its museums and stadium, it failed to look after its schools.

B 選項  competing companies (X1) one day may be partners (X2) the next.
