Massachusetts, were, according to legend, heard around the world, but news of these shots, which were sent by swift messenger, took four days in reaching New York City as well as another additional eleven days to reach Charleston, South Carolina.

答案E，我选C，为什么C不对呢？

news是单数，不可以用were,

语义重复 B-as well as ...additional; D-and ... in addition 排除

就只能选E了

而且E的分词结构比B简洁

难道没人觉得A,B,C后面的定语从句是就近修饰shots的而引起歧义吗？

是我想错了吗？

news不能做took的主语，因为物不能take ....to do...，只有人可以，所以D就显然正确了。这里messenger是took的发出者

NN来了。。。。。

这里的that引导定语从句对文章理解不是一定要的,所以应用which引导的非限制性定语从句.所以B,C错。即使用which，这里有修饰对象不清的问题。逻辑上，应修饰news,但语法上修饰shots. 所以A错。

而且A,D中another 和addition语义重复

表目的用to reach, in order to 罗索。 in reaching 错误。

只有E避免了上面所有错误，而且结构对等。

你如果选C,那么but news of these shots就没有谓语了，句子不完整。
