Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, but the English language was never really spoken on the island except for the domains of administration and teaching

the English language is spoken in the domains...
    spoken for the domain显然不对

    but except
                in

we must treat three of them separately. 1. But is used as conj. to link 2 sentences. 2. except, here used as prep. to connect a short prep phrase " in the domains of administration and teaching". 3. "in" is for that prep phrase

    Please verify. thanks

i drink water in the kitchen except in the bedroom.

i drink water in the kitchen except for the Cola.

    except for
Everyone went except for Scott and Dan.
She felt fine except for being a little tired.
    except in/by/to etc
Staff are not permitted to make personal phone calls except in an emergency.

比如这句in the domains of administration and teaching   和the English language

    没有except in这种习惯用法,这里的in是跟后面的 (in) the domain连在一起的
