27Last August the XT chain of gasoline stations had a temporary sales promotion in effectIn the promotion , any customer who made a purchase of ten or more gallons of gasoline was entitled to a tree car wash . For the month of August , XT experienced a ten percent increase in gasoline sales as compared to sales in August the previous year .so

evidently the promotion was successful as a means of boosting sales .

In evaluating the argument , it would be most helpful to answer which of the following ?

1.In the areas in which XT’s gasoline stations operate , how did total combined

gasoline sales for all gasoline stations last August compare with sales for the

previous August?

2.Was the money that XT earned from the increase in gasoline sales enough to

offset the cost of providing tree car washes during the promotion?

3.Were there any customers who bought ten or more gallons at an XT gasoline

station during the promotion who would have or more gallons at an XT gasoline

in lower quantities , but more frequently ,if the promotion had not been in effect?

4.Did XT or any or its gasoline stations have to pay other businesses to provide

the car washes that customers were offered in the promotion?

5.Are XT’s gasoline sales in August usually significantly higher than one twelfth of

XT’s annual gasoline sales ?

5th is right

答案是A。

注意原文是 the XT chain of gasoline stations ,不是gasoline stations ,部分不能代表整体。

3.Were there any customers who bought ten or more gallons at an XT gasoline

station during the promotion who would have or more gallons at an XT gasoline

in lower quantities , but more frequently ,if the promotion had not been in effect?

如果原题没有many, 就只有选A(因为选A附加了某些推理假设)。

如果将C中的any改为many,则应该选择C

3.Were there any customers(注意这里是复数) who bought ten or more gallons at an XT gasoline

station during the promotion who would have or more gallons at an XT gasoline

in lower quantities , but more frequently ,if the promotion had not been in effect?

如果原题没有many, 就只有选A(因为选A附加了某些推理假设)。

Which of the following, if true, provides evidence that most logically completes the argument below?
According to a widely held economic hypothesis, imposing strict environmental regulations reduces economic growth. This hypothesis is undermined by the fact that the states with the strictest environmental regulations also have the highest economic growth. This fact does not show that environmental regulations promote growth, however, since
A. those states with the strictest environmental regulations invest the most in education and job training
B. even those states that have only moderately strict environmental regulations have higher growth than those with the least-strict regulations
C. many states that are experiencing reduced economic growth are considering weakening their environmental regulations
D. after introducing stricter environmental regulations, many states experienced increased economic growth
E. even those states with very weak environmental regulations have experienced at least some growth

因为,只有A提到了with the strictest environmental regulations 。

即,可能是其他原因(A中的投资什么的)造成了the states with the strictest environmental regulations also have the highest economic growth.

A:

如果no.

Environmental organizations want to preserve the land surrounding the Wilgrinn Wilderness Area from residential development. They plan to do this by purchasing that land from the farmers who own it. That plan is ill-conceived: if the farmers did sell their land, they would sell it to the highest bidder, and developers would outbid any other bidders. On the other hand, these farmers will never actually sell any of the land, provided that farming it remains viable. But farming will not remain viable if the farms are left unmodernized, and most of the farmers lack the financial resources modernization requires. And that is exactly why a more sensible preservation strategy would be to assist the farmers to modernize their farms to the extent needed to maintain viability.
In the argument as a whole, the two boldface proportions play which of the following roles?
A. The first presents a goal that the argument rejects as ill-conceived; the second is evidence that is presented as grounds for that rejection.
B. The first presents a goal that the argument concludes cannot be attained; the second is a reason offered in support of that conclusion.
C. The first presents a goal that the argument concludes can be attained; the second is a judgment disputing that conclusion.
D. The first presents a goal, strategies for achieving which are being evaluated in the argument; the second is a judgment providing a basis for the argument’s advocacy of a particular strategy.
E. The first presents a goal that the argument endorses; the second presents a situation that the argument contends must be changed if that goal is to be met in the foreseeable future.

Last year a record number of new manufacturing jobs were created. Will this year bring another record? Well, any new manufacturing job is created either within an existing company or by the start-up of a new company. Within existing firms, new jobs have been created this year at well below last year’s record pace. At the same time, there is considerable evidence that the number of new companies starting up this year will be no higher than it was last year and there is no reason to think that the new companies starting up this year will create more jobs per company than did last year’s start-ups. So clearly, the number of new jobs created this year will fall short of last year’s record.
In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
A. The first provides evidence in support of the main conclusion of the argument; the second is a claim that argument challenges.
B. The first is a generalization that the argument seeks to establish; the second is a conclusion that the argument draws in order to support that generalization.
C. The first is a generalization that the argument seeks to establish; the second is a judgment that has been advanced in order to challenge that generalization.
D. The first is presented as obvious truth on which the argument is based; the second is a claim that has been advanced in support of a position that the argument opposes.

E. The first is presented as obvious truth on which the argument is based; the second is a judgment advanced in support of the main conclusion of the argument.

Whales originated in the freshwater lakes and rivers of ancient Asia about sixty million years ago. Not until about ten million years later did species of whales develop specialized kidneys enabling them to drink salt water. Although fossil evidence shows that some early whale species that lacked such kidneys sometimes swam in the Earth’s saltwater oceans, these species must have had to return frequently to freshwater rivers to drink.
Which of the following is most strongly supported by the information given?
A. Fossils of whale species dating from between sixty million and fifty million years ago will not be found on continents that were at the time separated from ancient Asia by wide expanses of ocean.
B. Among whale fossils that date from later than about fifty million years ago, none are fossils of whale species that drank only fresh water.
C. Fossils of whale species that drank fresh water will not be found in close proximity to fossils of whale species that drank salt water.
D. The earliest whales that drank salt water differed from fresh-water-drinking whales only in their possession of specialized kidneys.
E. Between sixty million and fifty million years ago, the freshwater lakes and rivers in which whales originated were gradually invaded by salt water.

Which of the following most logically completes the argument?
Yorco and Zortech are two corporations that employ large numbers of full-time workers who are paid by the hour. Publicly available records indicate that Yorco employs roughly the same number of such hourly wage workers as Zortech does but spends a far higher total sum per year on wages for such workers. Therefore, hourly wages must be higher, on average, at Yorco than at Zortech, since _____
A. Zortech spends a higher total sum per year than Yorco does to provide its hourly wage workers with benefits other than wages
B. the work performed by hourly wage workers at Zortech does not require a significantly higher level of skill than the work performed by hourly wage workers at Yorco does
C. the proportion of all company employees who are hourly wage workers is significantly greater at Yorco than it is at Zortech
D. overtime work, which is paid at a substantially higher rate than work done during the regular work week, is rare at both Yorco and Zortech
E. the highest hourly wages paid at Yorco are higher than the highest hourly wages paid at Zortech

E. The first presents a goal that the argument endorses; the second presents a situation that the argument contends must be changed if that goal is to be met in the foreseeable future.

这个论述的主结论是 That plan is ill-conceived。

Howardwang, 在看一下,我认为是D.“主结论是 That plan is ill-conceived。带有否定性质“同意。但是,Environmental organizations want to preserve the land surrounding the Wilgrinn Wilderness Area from residential development.是文章的主要目的,本身不是plan。但是达到辞目的有两种方法,一是purchasing that land from the farmers who own it 文章否定。第二是modernize their farms to the extent needed to maintain viability。支持。

另外,

Springfield Fire Commissioner: the vast majority of false fire alarms
are prank calls made anonymously from fire alarm boxes on Street
corners. Since virtually everyone has access to a private telephone, these alarm boxes have outlived their usefulness. Therefore, we propose to remove the boxes. Removing the boxes will reduce the number of prank calls without hampering people’s ability to report a fire.
Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the claim that the proposal, if carried out, will have the announced effect?
A. The fire department traces all alarm calls made from private telephones and records where they came from.
B. Maintaining the fire alarm boxes costs Springfield approximately five million dollars annually.
C. A telephone call can provide the fire department with more information about the nature and size of a fire than can an alarm placed from an alarm box.
D. Responding to false alarms significantly reduces the fire department’s capacity for responding to fires.
E. On any given day, a significant percentage of the public telephones in Springfield are out of service.

如果选D,strategies是指什么呢? a particular strategy.指什么呢?

Stategies refer to purchasing the land from farmer, which was evaluated by the argument (result negative). a particular strategy refer to morderizing their farm to maintain their viability

B. Maintaining the fire alarm boxes costs LACE w:st="on">SpringfieldLACE> approximately five million dollars annually.
C. A telephone call can provide the fire department with more information about the nature and size of a fire than can an alarm placed from an alarm box.
D. Responding to false alarms significantly reduces the fire department’s capacity for responding to fires.
E. On any given day, a significant percentage of the public telephones in LACE w:st="on">SpringfieldLACE> are out of service.

Initially, I think c but when looking at d and a, I changed mind.

announced effect is that Removing the boxes will reduce the number of prank calls without hampering people’s ability to report a fire. but shift from box to phone cannot prevent prank calls as people can make false call by phone rather than pushing the box so phoneline has to be traced. that is the difference between box and phone. Although c metion a good point, as compared to box, I think it is irrelevant as equal function is good enough.

RC have the same answer so ignoring the key provided by the exam.

Many thanks for your response.

They plan to do this by purchasing that land from the farmers who own it.
