偶也做错了。。。现在看来，这题不是考provide的用法，而是support名词的用法。下面是LONGMAN：

support

OG 中有明确考到这个结构，我记得非常清楚，provide后一定跟for,也有一些迷惑选项比如to什么的。可是我找不出那道题了：（

首先，我认为provide后面极少跟不定式，但也有例外

provide something

provide something for somebody

provide somebody with something

例子全部引自大全

这位说的有点那么个意思,我也有点同感.
结合那个OG里,最高法院给CIA特权那题里面的不定式的解释和用法,我个人感觉:
如果用不定式,那么不定式 "to"前后的动作要明确是同一个人.
比如:
I save money to buy the car.
这里, to 前后 save money和buy的动作都是I,所以用不定式OK的.
本题目里,
evidence provides support,但是classify(归类)这个动作不是evidence作出的(而是某些专家在evidence的support下,作出的). 这里这个classify的动作发出人没有给出,所以用for 来弱化.

觉得de在语法上都没问题，一个是provide sth to do.一个是provide sth+修饰结构修饰sth，所以感觉问题在于classify Africa’s forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species的作用，是修饰provide的，还是修饰support的，如果是修饰provide的，表目的，那就是e对；如果是修饰support的，补充supprot的内容，那就是d对，所以关键在于句意。

再来看原句

我认为这里原句想表达的意思是提供了新证据的发现是无目的性的，也即科学家们在挖啊挖，突然——恩！？有东西！啥玩意？带回所里一研究，发现可以用来classify Africa’s forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species，所以是宣布New genetic evidence—together with recent studies of elephants’ skeletons, tusks, and other anatomical features-provides compelling support for classifying Africa’s forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species，而不是科学家们带着to classify Africa’s forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species的目的去发现New genetic evidence，发现后宣布New genetic evidence provide support to classify Africa’s forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species

根据语意精确度来判断，classify的时候这些证据都已经有了，时间上是同时的，而to classify强调了时间的先后顺序。而且翻译过来，D提供证据能分类，E提供证据专门来分类，仔细体会下意思～

"Providing support to ___" implies that "___" is a person/organization/etc. trying to accomplish something.

E.g., Volunteers provided support to the Red Cross during the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts.

Doesn't work here.

sb. provide sth. to do 的用法是这个主语可以发出support这个动作。
而sb. provide sth. for doing 这个for doing是修饰sth. 的。意思是这个主语只能发出provide这个动作。
