When drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950’s, some 4,000 existed in the United States, but today there are less than one-quarter that many.

A. there are less than one-quarter that many

B. there are fewer than one-quarter as many

C. there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount

D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount (C)

E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount

why C? and why not D?

the number指代的是4，000，逻辑上错误。

MM, as many 后面漏了个as，这样的用法里as要成双出现的

有没有搞错啊。amount根本就只能用在不可数名词上，

is->less->amount

are->fewer->number

只有b在可数不可数上是一致的。one-quarter as many 就是 one-quarter of that number的意思。

同意选B，但总感觉B少了些什么，B后面应该省了as many (as before)吧
