标题: enough to 与 so as to、so that 的区别 强烈要求nn拍砖

做笔考真题55的时候,发现了一个题的正确选项居然是enough to,甚为奇怪,以前从未注意,在大全中一搜,发现oG88就出现了这个考点。但说的不清楚。我把大全中所有enough to和so as to、so that区分的题目搜出来,自己感觉区别是这样的

enough to do放在动词,或形容此后面表示有足够的程度来达到什么目的

而so as to、so that 引导状语从句来表so怎么样所带来的结果

请教牛牛们是否正确!!

下面是我搜出来的题目

Enough to so as to 区别

1VEnough to do adv修饰动词,放在动词后面,表其程度足够来如何如何,而so as toso that表程度足够引起的结果

(E)   to affect the trajectories of ballistic missiles and induce

给北极上大气层足够的加热来影响。。。。

heat the atmosphere over the arctic enough to

The use of the phrasing can heat... enough to affect in A and E is more idiomatic than the use of the subordinate clause beginning with that in B, C, and D. Also, B produces an illogical and ungrammatical statement by making induce parallel with the verb heat rather than with the appropriate form of the verb affect; C lacks agreement in using the singular pronoun it to refer to the plural noun displays; and D is faulty because induces cannot fit grammatically with any noun in the sentence. Choice A incorrectly separates the two infinitives to affect and [to] induce with a comma when it should compound them with and, as does E, the best choice

2Adj Enough to do adv修饰adj,放在adj后面

(B) glaciers are not the cold, dry polar regions but the cool, moist middle latitudes

enough+to不定式, 没有哪本书说不能用啊! 初中英语句子: He is old enough to join the army.

171.

In 1527 King Henry VIII sought to have his marriage to Queen Catherine annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn.

(A) so as to marry

(B) and so could be married to

(C) to be married to

(D) so that he could marryD

(E) in order that he would marry

The sentence calls for an adverbial clause of purpose to explain why Henry sought the annulment. D, the best choice, does this clearly and correctly. It is introduced by an appropriate conjunction, so that, and contains a logically appropriate verb form, could marry. Awkward and imprecise, A does not specify who is to marry Anne. B substitutes an illogical coordinate predicate for the needed purpose clause; because the annulment had not yet been granted, Henry could not remarry. C lacks an appropriate conjunction, and the infinitive clause to be married to... makes this choice awkward and unidiomatic. Although E uses an appropriate conjunction, in order that, the verb form would marry is unidiomatic and illogical (might marry would be better).

只是B substitutes an illogical coordinate predicate for the needed purpose clause; because the annulment had not yet been granted, Henry could not remarry. 是什么意思啊..看得不太懂...

划线考点88. The Emperor Augustus, it appears, commissioned an idealized sculpture portrait, the features of which are so unrealistic as to constitute what one scholar calls an "artificial face."

(A) so unrealistic as to constitute

为og11-36原题..

首先,答案指出:1,这是固定句型:the sentence uses the construction "x happened so that y could happen";so introduces a clause of purpose or result, explaining the reason for the action in the main clause.(在该句中表示目的,正如我上面写的加了could就表示目的了)

2.B:the alternative is ungrammatical and illogical:Henry could not marry simply on the basis of seeking annulment(这个有点费解..估计老美的思维真的是在某些方面和我们是千差万别的..)不过,to be married 没有to marry 好倒是真的~~

我从collins上面摘录下来的,供大家参考:

1、You use so and so that to introduce the result of the situation you have just mentioned.
I am not an emotional type and so cannot bring myself to tell him I love him...
People are living longer than ever before, so even people who are 65 or 70 have a surprising amount of time left...
There was snow everywhere, so that the shape of things was difficult to identify.

2、You use so, so that, and so as to introduce the reason for doing the thing that you have just mentioned.
Come to my suite so I can tell you all about this wonderful play I saw in Boston...
He took her arm and hurried her upstairs so that they wouldn't be overheard...
I was beginning to feel alarm, but kept it to myself so as not to worry our two friends.

3、You can use so...that and so...as to emphasize the degree of something by mentioning the result or consequence of it.
           The tears were streaming so

fast she could not see...
The deal seems so attractive it would be ridiculous to say no...
He's not so daft as to listen to rumours.

重要的是后面两种用法,so that和so...that,以及so as to和so...as to还是要搞清楚的。

但我觉得石林说的是so that和so as to作目的状语的时候,而不是so...that or so...as to(像12楼所说)

如果as to后面的动词和主语之间有逻辑错误通常选so that因为that后面必须要有自己的主语,这个主语如果和后面的动词逻辑关系正确就是正确选项;但是如果as to后面的动词和主语之间逻辑关系正确,就应该选so as to,因为相对于so that简洁。

难道so...that引导的结果状语和so that引导的目的状语都可以适用这条原则?

但og171. In 1527 King Henry VIII sought to have his marriage to Queen Catherine annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn. *****
(A) so as to marry
(B) and so could be married to
(C) to be married to
(D) so that he could marry
(E) in order that he would marry
The sentence calls for an adverbial clause of purpose to explain why Henry sought the annulment. D, the best choice, does this clearly and correctly. It is introduced by an appropriate conjunction, so that, and contains a logically appropriate verb form, could marry. Awkward and imprecise, A does not specify who is to marry Anne. B substitutes an illogical coordinate predicate for the needed purpose clause; because the annulment had not yet been granted. Henry could not remarry. C lacks an appropriate conjunction, and the infinitive clause to be married to ... makes this choice awkward and unidiomatic. Although E uses an appropriate conjunction, in order that, the verb form would marry is unidiomatic and illogical (might marry would be better).

也说明是用so that作目的状语从句的时候符合此规则。请指教。

“so...that...”句型的意思是“如此/这么……以致于……”,常引导结果状语从句,但“so...that...”是个爱“变脸”句型,现将其用法总结归纳如下。

一、 so... that...句型中的so是副词,常常用来修饰形容词或副词,常用句型为:主语+谓语+so+adj. / adv. + that从句。例如:

1. he is so young that she can't look after herself.

2. The boy ran so fast that I couldn't catch him.

3. He was so angry that he couldn't say a word.

二、 在“such... that...”句型中,such修饰名词,意思也是“如此……以致于……”但当名词前有many、much、(a) few、(a) little等词修饰时,句子中要用“so...that...”而不能用“such...that...”。例如:

1. He has so much money that he can buy what he wanted.

2. I've had so many falls that I have pains here and there.

3. There is little water in the glass that I can't drink any more.

三、 so与that也可连起来写,即变成:... so that ...(以便 / 为了……),引导目的状语从句。例如:

1. I got up early so that I could catch the early bus.

2. Please open the window so that we can breathe fresh air.

3. You must go now so that you won't be late.

四、以“so...that”引导的结果状语从句可以转换成不定式的简单句,即可转换为“...enough to...”或“...too...to”句型,但这种转换必须符合下列条件:

1. 当主句和从句的主语一致,且that从句是肯定句时,可用“enough to do sth.”来转换。例如:

The man is so strong that he can lift the heavy box.→

The man is strong enough to lift the heavy box.

He was so clever that he can understand what I siad. →

He was clever enough to understand what I siad.

2. 当主句和从句的主语不一致,且that从句是肯定句时,可以用“enough for sb. to do sth.”来替换,但须注意不定式的宾语要省略。例如:

The question is so easy that I can work it out. →

The question is easy enough for me to work out.

The box is so light that he can carry it. →

The box is light enough for him to carry.

3. 当主句和从句的主语一致,且that从句是否定句时,可以用“too...to”来替换。例如:

The girl is so young that she can't dress herself. →

The girl is too young to dress herself.

I was so tired that I couldn't go on with the work. →

I was too tired to go on with the work.

4. 当主句和从句的主语不一致,且that从句是否定时,如果要用“too...to...”替换“so...that...”,则用介词for引出动词不定式的逻辑主语,可以用“too...for sb. to do sth.”来替换,注意不定式的宾语要省略。

The bag is so heavy that she can't move it. →

The bag is too heavy for her to move.

It is so hot that we can't sleep. →

It is too hot for us to sleep.

(B) to provide workers with unpaid leave so as to

(C) provide workers with unpaid leave in order that they

(D) to provide workers with unpaid leave so that they can

(E) provide workers with unpaid leave and

答案是D

新东方对这道题的解释是so as to要前后逻辑主语一致,即B选项错在care for sick or newborn children的逻辑主语是emloyers而不是workers,并非前辈brightcoolsz所说的那样so as to就近修饰。按照这个说法,OG171里,marry Anne Boleyn逻辑主语明显应该是King Henry VIII啊,不应该像OG的解释的那样A does not specify who is to marry Anne. 请高人赐教

(C) provide workers with unpaid leave in order that they

(D) to provide workers with unpaid leave so that they can

(E) provide workers with unpaid leave and

答案是D

啊,我懂了。。
so as to 的主语是employers, 而D中‘they’ refers to workers...
care for sick or newborn children的主语肯定是workers.

638Several years ago the diet industry introduced a variety of appetite suppressants, but some of these drugs

caused stomach disorders severe enough to have them banned by the Food and Drug Administration.

(A) stomach disorders severe enough to have them

(B) stomach disorders that were severe enough so they were

(C) stomach disorders of such severity so as to be

(D) such severe stomach disorders that they wereD

(E) such severe stomach disorders as to be

另外 so...that 里面逻辑指代的多,不需要在就近指代方面较真,就比如以上这个~

继续讨论

看了半天也没发现个正解啊,再次踢上来.

我也在纠结皇帝结婚那道题,so as to 前面只有一个实意动词并且so as to 的主语就是主句主语,还比 so...that简洁,为什么是错的.

OG解释说so as to 主语不清,不能明白.

作者: gwinyu    时间: 2009-9-22 15:57

这样总结怎么样?

1.当看到 'so as to' , 找准谁是动作的发起人,没歧义则用so as to (相对简洁)

Ex)The Emperor Augustus, it appears, commissioned an idealized sculptured portrait, the features of which are so unrealistic that they have constituted what one scholar calls an “artificial face”
The official answer is: so unrealistic as to constitute

2.若歧义(发起人不对),选so that OG171

Ex1Congress is debating a bill requiring certain employers provide workers with unpaid leave so as to care for sick or newborn children.
official answer : to provide workers with unpaid leave so that they can
解释:歧义, employersor”workers”

Ex2OG171. In 1527 sought to have his marriage to annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn.

(A)    so as to marry

(B)    and so could be married to

(C)    to be married to

(D)   so that he could marry

(E)    in order that he would marry

    D

                A歧义,"King Henry VIII" or"Queen Catherine"

作者: JJJooe    时间: 2009-10-2 13:58
关于这几个用法大家都总结的很好了
我觉得目前唯一的问题就是
og
In 1527

King Henry VIII sought to have his marriage to annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn.

(A)    so as to marry

(B)    and so could be married to

(C)    to be married to

(D)   so that he could marry

(E)    in order that he would marry

这道题

答案d是没问题

只是go对于a错误的解释说逻辑主语不清,实在让人难以接受

有美国朋友说这里明显的逻辑主语就是

King Henry VIII没啥歧义

我个人觉得a如果so as to没有错误

那只能说d选项更好了

那究竟什么是d项能表达的而a项不能呢?我觉得就是那个could

废除婚姻关系是为了“能够”迎娶新欢

据说og上对于

so...as to的用法说是错误的了

那现在表达目的就是
...so that...
...so as to...(注意逻辑主语是否符合,注意是否其它选项有没有so...that...通过事态表达出so...as to无法表达的含义)

表达程度结果的
so...that...

也就是这样子了

据说og上对于

赞同,今天做37题,说so...as to是错误的了

看了半天也没发现个正解啊,再次踢上来.

我也在纠结皇帝结婚那道题,so as to 前面只有一个实意动词并且so as to 的主语就是主句主语,还比 so...that简洁,为什么是错的.

OG解释说so as to 主语不清,不能明白.

This sentence should use the construction x happened so that y could happen; so introduces a
clause of purpose, explaining the reason for the action in the main clause. Henry sought to have his marriage annulled so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. The relationship between the two clauses is clear.

D. Correct. This sentences construction clearly shows the reason that Henry sought an annulment; could is more appropriate than would because the annulment would not ensure his marriage
it would only enable him to marry.
这个题里有明显的为了的意思。所以B排除了。C的被动也没有必要。
关于解释couldwould的区别。是说和上任妻子离婚并不能保证亨利和安妮结婚。而是使亨利能够和安妮结婚。也就是说这里不能用would 排除了E. would是将要的意思。难道和原配离婚,就将要要和安妮结婚吗?当然不是。这个题是在说,和原配离了。以便于亨利能够和安妮结婚。
这样可不可以理解这题?

感觉enought to 和so that/so as to 的区别是弱语气关系。这你只能看原文逻辑。
至于so that  和 so as to 的关系是看从句的性质。
that 后面肯定是个句子,肯定没有动词简洁,但是相应的对象和逻辑关系可以再次陈述,所以可以清晰(或者错误的被混淆)。
动词永远的问题是无法准确的表达施加者行为之间的逻辑,我做题时候倾向于把so 拆出来看看,结果我就发现成了He sought to have his marrage to annulled, so he marry to Ann. 感觉仿佛成了为了无效婚姻而结婚的意思。So that he could marry to Ann. 似乎更合理的理解为,因为他这样就能和Ann结婚了,所以他试图无效离婚。
感觉单纯的翻译so as to(以便于)和so that 容易把为了去做某动作和为了做某事情之间微妙的区别。
至于so...that 则是另一回事,so这里仿佛是程度副词,之间肯定是个修饰的形容词,而后的that应该是对该程度造成的结果的叙述。

查了longman的so用法的词条:

so作adv时:
[+adjective/adverb] used when emphasizing the degree or amount of something by saying what the result is

so ... (that)
He was so weak that he could hardly stand up.
There was so much smoke that they couldn't see across the hallway.
Everything happened so quickly I hadn't time to think.

so ... as to be
The particles are so small as to be almost invisible.

所以so...that和so...as to be 表程度结果(并无so...as to的说法,但本人不才目前也没有碰到过有so...as to be的用法。

so作conj.

so (that)有两种用法:
a) in order to make something happen, make something possible etc:
He lowered his voice so Doris couldn't hear.
Why don't you start out early so that you don't have to hurry?
b) used to say that something happens or is true as a result of the situation you have just stated:
There are no buses, so you'll have to walk.
The gravestones were covered with moss so that it was impossible to read the names on them.
第一种是主观因素而第二种是客观因素。都可翻为“以至于”。

so as to do something [formal]: in order to do something:
I drove at a steady 50 mph so as to save fuel.
We went along silently on tiptoe so as not to disturb anyone.
表目的,前后逻辑主语要一致。

(个人也很纠结于king这道题)根据longman的解释,其实感觉a选项的解释有点奇怪。比较赞同31楼和楼上的说法,问题出在could上。

今天做GWD看到一篇阅读
GWD28-Q3 to Q6

Another experiment showed that house sparrows consumed less red food after they observed others eating red food that was treated so as to be noxious.

这里的so as to 当什么讲..怎么翻译

Sherwin’s research team speculated that ecological or social constraints during the evolution of this species might have resulted in there being little benefit from the social learning of unpalatability

The category 1 to 5 rating known as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale provides an estimate
of a hurricane’s potential of destroying or damaging property, and is primarily determined from
wind speed; a category 5 storm has wind speeds so high as to blow away small buildings,
completely destroy mobile homes, and cause severe window and door damage.
• of destroying or damaging property, and is primarily determined from wind speed; a category
5 storm has wind speeds so high as
• to destroy or damage property, and is primarily determined from wind speed; a category 5
storm has wind speeds high enough
• of destroying or damaging property, and is primarily determined by wind speed; a category 5
storm has wind speeds so high as
• to destroy or damage property, and is primarily determined by wind speed; a category 5 storm
has wind speeds high enough
• to destroy or damage property, and is primarily determined by wind speed; a category 5 storm
has wind speeds so high as

答案选E
When referring to y as the potential outcome of x, the correct idiom is “x’s potential to
y.” This sentence incorrectly phrases the idiom as “a hurricane’s potential of
destroying or damaging.” When referring to the use of y to determine x, the correct
idiom is “x is determined by y.” This sentence incorrectly phrases the idiom as
“potential … is determined from wind speeds.” Finally, there is a subtle distinction
between the idiom "so x as to y" and “x is enough to y.”
The original sentence uses
the idiom "so x as to y" to indicate that characteristic x is so extreme in the particular
case that y results. In contrast, the idiom "x is enough to y" is used when x is the
criteria by which an ability to achieve y is measured. Thus, if a sentence stated that "a
category 5 storm has wind speeds high enough to blow away small buildings," this
would convey a different meaning: that wind speeds are the criteria by which one
measures the ability to blow away small houses.
(A) This choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.
(B) When referring to the use of y to determine x, the correct idiom is “x is determined
by y.” This sentence incorrectly phrases the idiom as “potential … is determined from
wind speeds.” The change from the original idiom "wind speeds so high as to..." to the
idiom presented in this sentence “high enough to...” changes the original meaning of
the sentence; it conveys that wind speeds are the criteria by which one measures the
ability to blow away small houses. The idiom "so x as to y" is required instead to
match the original meaning: that characteristic x (the wind speed) is so extreme in the
particular case (a category 5 storm) that y results (small houses are blown away).
(C) When referring to y as the potential outcome of x, the correct idiom is “x’s
potential to y.” This sentence incorrectly phrases the idiom as “a hurricane’s potential
of destroying or damaging.”
(D) The idiom “high enough to blow away small buildings” changes the original
meaning; it conveys that wind speeds are the criteria by which one measures the
ability to blow away small houses. The idiom "so x as to y" is required instead to
match the original meaning: that characteristic x (the wind speed) is so extreme in the
particular case (a category 5 storm) that y results (small houses are blown away).
(E) CORRECT. All idioms in the sentence are used correctly.

结合前面各位大神的知识点,总结了一下子
so .. that/as to 表结果(但是如果as to后面的动词和主语之间逻辑关系正确,就应该选so...as to,因为相对于so...that简洁。)
so that/as to 表目的(so that 后要跟情态动词)
adj / v + enough to do 强调动作 (没有 enough as/so..)
such ...as to基本就是个错误选项了
选择so as to 还是 so...that (so that)主要取决前面的逻辑主语请不清楚,也就是说如果一个句子里面出现两个或两个以上的名词,就要考虑一下so as to 后面有没有主语指代不明。
因为that从句总是要求把主语写出来, 否则句子没有主语,就会犯句子无主语的低级错误,既然有了明确的主语, 谁为主句的目的发出相关动作就清楚无疑了.
(注:so that与so…that不同,前者是目的状语,后者是表结果的状语)
