我也觉得有问题, 第一部分的黑体内容就半句来说不可能是conclusion,
, 除非把这句 those worrisome rumors must be false.也加成黑体!
I don't think D is a good answer. The second bold face can not be a main conclusion.
I prefer to choose C although the noun ,"the evidence", in this sectence is not good.
But I think the "undermine" is the key function of this sectence

D is correct. the BF is the intermediate conclusion that forms part of the evidence that leads to the final conclusion.
the 2nd BF doesn't undermine the first conclusion. it's purely a judgment or a conclusion.
