In recent years, the rapid development of China's e-commerce industry has significantly impacted traditional retail businesses. According to a report by the Ministry of Commerce, online retail sales in China reached 11.76 trillion yuan ($1.85 trillion) in 2020, accounting for 24.9% of the total retail sales of consumer goods. This represents a year-on-year increase of 10.9%, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the most prominent players in China's e-commerce market is Alibaba Group, which operates popular platforms such as Taobao and Tmall. In 2020, Alibaba's annual active consumers reached 779 million, with a GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume) of 7.49 trillion yuan ($1.18 trillion) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021. The company's success can be attributed to its innovative strategies, such as the "New Retail" concept, which integrates online and offline retail experiences.
However, the rapid growth of e-commerce has also brought challenges to traditional retailers. Many brick-and-mortar stores have struggled to compete with the convenience, variety, and competitive prices offered by online platforms. To adapt to the changing market, some traditional retailers have embraced digital transformation, establishing their own online presence or partnering with e-commerce platforms.
For example, Wangfujing Group, a leading department store chain in China, launched its online store on Tmall in 2015. By leveraging the platform's vast user base and advanced technologies, Wangfujing has been able to expand its reach and improve its operational efficiency. In 2020, the company's online sales increased by 30% year-on-year, partially offsetting the impact of the pandemic on its offline business.
Furthermore, the Chinese government has introduced policies to support the integration of online and offline retail, such as the "Internet Plus" initiative. This initiative aims to promote the application of internet technologies across various industries, including retail, to drive innovation and economic growth. Local governments have also provided incentives, such as subsidies and tax breaks, to encourage traditional retailers to embrace e-commerce.
As China's e-commerce market continues to evolve, it is crucial for traditional retailers to adapt and find ways to leverage the opportunities presented by digital transformation. By embracing change and innovation, these businesses can remain competitive and contribute to the overall growth of China's retail industry.

In a groundbreaking study, Lindh and Baker discovered a pattern of six earthquakes occurring at roughly 22-year intervals along a 15-mile stretch of the San Andreas fault near the small town of Parkfield. Their theory predicted that the next quake of at least magnitude 6.0 should have struck Parkfield by 1988, with a 95 percent probability by the end of 1992. Historical accounts of Parkfield earthquakes reported numerous anomalous precursors, prompting the installation of over twenty observational networks to detect these signs. However, as of this writing, the anticipated Parkfield earthquake has not materialized, casting doubt on the concept of earthquake periodicity.
Further evidence against earthquake cycles has emerged from the relatively new field of paleoseismology. Large earthquakes leave behind geological features such as fault scarps, landslides, and soil liquefaction, which can be excavated and radiocarbon-dated centuries or even millennia after the event. In 1989, paleoseismologist Kerry E. Sieh and his colleagues at Caltech published a chronology of earthquakes at Pallett Creek, located along the San Andreas fault approximately 35 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Their findings revealed a mean interval of 132 years between ten earthquakes that occurred over the past two millennia, with individual intervals ranging from 44 to 332 years.
Despite the setback, Lindh remains undeterred, likening earthquake prediction to the development of an AIDS vaccine, stating, "You are not allowed to be pessimistic or optimistic." Robert Wesson also maintains that predictions can help mitigate hazards. However, other seismologists, such as Robert Geller, vehemently oppose any form of forecast, arguing that neither short-term nor long-term predictions have a sound scientific basis. Geller warns, "The danger in basing government policy on such unsound predictions is that there is a tendency to assume that particular regions are especially dangerous. That has the effect of concentrating earthquake disaster mitigation efforts, rather than spreading them out over an entire region of similar geological and seismic type."
1. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Earthquake prediction is an exact science.
B. The Parkfield Experiment successfully predicted the next earthquake.
C. Paleoseismology provides evidence supporting earthquake periodicity.
D. The Parkfield Experiment and paleoseismology challenge the idea of earthquake periodicity.
E. Government policies should not be based on earthquake predictions.
2. According to Lindh and Baker's theory, when should the next earthquake of at least magnitude 6.0 have struck Parkfield?
A. By 1988
B. By the end of 1992
C. 22 years after the last earthquake
D. 132 years after the last earthquake
E. The passage does not specify
3. What evidence from paleoseismology challenges the idea of earthquake periodicity?
A. Fault scarps and landslides can be radiocarbon-dated.
B. The mean interval between ten earthquakes at Pallett Creek was 132 years.
C. Individual earthquake intervals at Pallett Creek ranged from 44 to 332 years.
D. Paleoseismology is a relatively new field.
E. Kerry E. Sieh and his colleagues published a chronology of earthquakes at Pallett Creek.
4. How does Lindh view earthquake prediction?
A. He is pessimistic about its prospects.
B. He is optimistic about its prospects.
C. He believes it is like working on an AIDS vaccine.
D. He thinks it has a sound scientific basis.
E. He opposes any kind of forecast.
5. According to Robert Geller, what is the danger of basing government policy on unsound earthquake predictions?
A. It assumes that particular regions are especially dangerous.
B. It spreads earthquake disaster mitigation efforts over an entire region.
C. It ignores regions of similar geological and seismic type.
D. It relies on short-term predictions.
E. It relies on long-term predictions.
6. What does the passage suggest about the success of the Parkfield Experiment?
A. It successfully predicted the next earthquake.
B. It detected numerous anomalous precursors.
C. It installed over twenty observational networks.
D. It cast doubt on the idea of earthquake periodicity.
E. It confirmed Lindh and Baker's theory
7. What is the purpose of the observational networks installed near Parkfield?
A. To predict the exact time of the next earthquake
B. To measure the magnitude of future earthquakes
C. To detect precursors to earthquakes
D. To provide evidence for earthquake periodicity
E. To monitor geological features such as fault scarps and landslides
8. Which of the following best describes Robert Wesson's opinion on earthquake prediction?

P1: L&B predict earthquake in 1988, but didn’t happen, casting doubt on concept of earthquake periodicity
P2: New field paleoseismology also against cycles. Study showed there is no pattern
P3: L still promotes earthquake prediction, same as RW. But others oppose forecast earthquakes because there is no scientific basis.

The danger in basing government policy on such unsound predictions is that there is a tendency to assume that particular regions are especially dangerous.
Historical accounts of Parkfield earthquakes reported numerous anomalous precursors, prompting the installation of over twenty observational networks to detect these signs.
Robert Wesson also maintains that predictions can help mitigate hazards.

2 我的答案:b;HP不太有利润,LP是店铺的利润来源;店长打算结束HP来提高整体利润;---哪个最削弱?客户买LP是因为有HP在那儿摆着;
3 我的答案:d;XBC卖的好,导致当地其它餐厅C的销量下降;但是,没有XBC的地方,C的销量也下降了;哪个真,可以解释这个现象?---e,天气原因导致C的价格增加,餐厅对C的供应少了;d,直接说因为谣言减少了消费;
