申请项目: MKT(CB)

BG

Wharton, Columbia, Booth, NYU, Kellogg, Duke, USC, Cornell, U Toronto, INSEAD
主申:UW, UT Austin, BU, UF, UMN, UMD, PennState, CU Boulder, UIUC, UPitt, Virginia Tech, ASU, UBC

1. Coursework

Did you decline several interview invitations after receiving enough offers?
I'm just shocked that you were only interviewed by 5 of your 主申 schools.

While I am not that knowledgeable about Consumer Psychology or Behavior, I am aware that the job market for this discipline is as tough as that for Management. That means a PhD in CB from a Tier 2 or Tier 3 school may not be a sure ticket to a decent research school (all of your 'focused schools' listed except VT belong to these tiers). So, I wonder if you are still navigating the waitlist at that top school and if so how likely you can emerge out of it being successful. Away from North America, if you have got an offer from HKUST, you may want to give it serious consideration.

No, I did not withdraw any application in the interview stage.

Indeed this issue could be somehow attirbuted externally (e.g., does not take in new students this year) for several prgorams (I know at least 3 in my 主申 schools) and internally (my SOP topic selection). That said, I still think the competition this year in the PhD application pool was way more higher than my expectation, probably also higher than that of last two years (based on my own observation and also echoed by a faculty member of a top program)...

Ive accpeted an offer from a tier-2 program (my own perspective) which I am relatively satisfied with. But thanks for your kind reminder!

Also, that why I am saying some programs in a specific field could be largely underestimated. In the last few years, VT has placed CB students to HK PolyU, NYU SH etc., which is I think is a placement record that may be not super impressive but definitely decent. But for sure, if some students are aiming much higher, then it goes without saying that they should run for and wait for the tier 1 programs, as you suggested

Right, VT has had a few impressive placements in the past several years, particularly in Accounting and Marketing areas. In this sense, the program is characteristic of 'mid-ranking' (no derogatory meaning implied in the use of the term) schools where performance varies widely across the concentrations. This harkens back to the recent posting in the forum on VT's Management concentration slamming it for its highly toxic environment.

Yess, I also saw that complaint and I feel sorry for the original poster there. But as far as I know, their CB cohort is very supportive with a few productive scholars joining last year. The same also applies to some other programs I mentioned (PolyU, Boulder). They are all strong (tho not traditionally) and rising CB programs worth considering for CB applicants.

Just to add on, if you get an offer from a program, make sure to reach out and talk to their students/graduates, especially given that Asian students usually may not be able to pay a campus visit in person. Most times they will provide much insider info which can determine your life quality in the next five to six years.
