UC, Santa Cruz?

古天乐's words are always offbeat, brimming with wisdom (sort of folksy to me), and strikingly true. This says that you must possess certain distinct personality traits that will help make you an exceptional scholar.

The UCSC Econ Dept is within the top 50 according to various rankings such as IDEAS/RePec. A PhD from there can almost surely secure you an economist position at a reputed research institution (e.g., SEC), which, in my view, is as good as a faculty job at a 'balanced' or research school that a PhD from Utah usually promises. So, the decision is all yours to make.

P.S. Among Utah's recent placements in Finance is not Iowa but Iowa State (the former is at least two levels above the latter in research).

Hi Tripleg,
Thank you for your compliments.
Basically, I'm too old, too simple, and sometime naive.

I do agree that any qualitied Econ PhD programs provide people with more possibilities and diversities.
Nevertheless, if someone's research interest can fit both Econ and FIN and have the intention for a faculty job, I think Biz PhD programs generally provide a much safer environment for international students.
If he/she can stand out from a not very top Econ PhD program, he/she definitely has no problem to stand out from a qualitied Biz PhD program.
However, I've also seen many Biz PhD students wasted their talent in a mid-level or lower-level Biz schools as they don't have survival pressures, because, as you said, they know they can at least get a tenure job in a teach university.

That's right. No clear demarcation has as yet been drawn between Economics and Finance in particular (nor Business in general). For example, many macroeconomists engage in working on topics that are related closely to Financial Economics. Some strands of work in OR draw heavily on microeconomics and econometrics.

By the way, in case you wonder about my username for the forum, it has its conception from the fact that I had taken the GRE three times. I had taken it the first time without any prep and, expectedly, with an embarrassing result (in the lower 600s). Thereupon I brought myself to prep but did not show up for the scheduled second try because of a schedule conflict. Finally, I came out of the third and final try kind of with flying colors (with a result around mid-700s plus a full score on writing).

LOL
I thought it means three legs.
I took GMAT 4 times, and I got 680->660->640->620, sequentially.
I only prepared one month for my 1st GMAT exam and got 680.
At that time, I thought I was a genius and could easily earn 780 two months later.

Two months later I only got 660.
At that time, I thought it was because I didn't read 机经

After reading 机经 for two months, I only got 640.
At that time, I thought it was an accident.

After another two months, OMG, I got 620.
Then I realized that the 680 of my first try was pure luck and I should never take the GMAT anymore.

I also took TOEFL 6 times in China and never reached 100 and my speaking part never reached 20.
My oral English still has very strong accent but I'm very proud of myself.
I'm from Fujian. Even my mandarin has very strong accent.  How dare anyone require me to have no accent in English.

Oh, my! That's incredible and hilarious. Only supermen have three legs!

I think by "机经" you refer to real exam questions posted in online forums by test takers in breach of their written oath not to do that made at the time of testing.
