D.twice as many as the increase in
E.twice as many as the increase of

D.by the use of Web sites, public meetings, as well as mass mailings—that convinced
E.which used Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—in convincing
B :A主谓不一致,排;as well as & and 排D;which修饰错误,时态错误排E;in convincing状语,但与organize无关,排C

A 原句为increase不是数字,先排除CDE;B的that没必要
B A主谓不一致CE的in convincing感觉不太对劲Organize a campaign in convicing?  D by the use of也不太好,后面时态也不对
C AB的than后面和前面没啥平行对应的,C就非常对称;DE expect Sb. that不对
1.B, increase用as much as;in 1990和in the previous year对应,不用of
2.C, campaign谓语动词用单数;that has convinced定语,句意表达不好;which used 定语,句意表达不好
3.C, than they were的were找不到平行对象;that they will be 与expect automakers连接不上,will表示将来很有可能发生,但句意没有这个意思;conservatively修饰set,这里应该修饰automakers

1.(181)The number of people flying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, doubling the increase of the previous year.  D错—应为A
A. doubling the increase of --double意思是"make twice as great",使increase/growth 两倍,doing引导伴随状语或者目的状语
B. doubling that of the increase in –that无指代
C. double as much as the increase of --错应该改为doubling,
D. twice as many as the increase in-- Many用法错误the increase不是可数的量
"the increase in X" 意为X本身在增加,套用到原句里面不对
补充:
twice as many as/ X times Y/ double as much as是同位语修饰词(appositive modifier),要紧接其修饰的内容,在此句子中逗号前不是一个figure,所以不能用 twice as many as这个结构
E. twice as many as the increase of— "the increase of TIME PERIOD"意为某时段的增加量;Many用法错误

2.(182)The organic food industry has organized a successful grassroots campaign—using Web sites, public meetings, and also mass mailings—that have convinced the Department of Agriculture to change the proposed federal regulations for organically grown food. B

A. using Web sites, public meetings, and also mass mailings—that have convinced—have错,前修饰主语为campaign,应为单数;also多余
B. using Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—that has convinced
C.by using Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—in convincing-- in convincing修饰动作organized,主语为organic food industry语意不对(By using逻辑含义上不等于using,其表达的是因为通过那三个方式草根运动才是成功的,这个含义不对)
D.by the use of Web sites, public meetings, as well as mass mailings—that convinced-- by the use of不简洁;一般过去时态不对,表示convinced发生在has organized之前
E. which used Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—in convincing-- in convincing修饰动作organized,主语为organic food industry语意不对;一般过去时态不对,表示convinced发生在has organized之前,不合逻辑

3.(183)Despite recent increases in sales and cash flow that have propelled automobile companies' common stocks to new highs, several industry analysts expect automakers, in order to conserve cash, to set dividends more conservatively than they were.
A.to set dividends more conservatively than they were-- they were不对conservatively修饰动作set后面也应该为一个动作的比较,实义动词to set(表达预测,将来时)与系动词were不平行,应该是: to set Div. more conservatively than they have done.
B.to set dividends more conservatively than they have been to set与have been不平行,要在been后面加上setting或改为have set以修正平行
C.to be more conservative than they have been in setting dividends—to be表示从现在开始的未来,have been 从过去 到现在,时间轴上没有空缺
D. that they will be more conservative than they were in setting dividends-- that后they多余Expect sb. that搭配错误,只能用expect that或expect sb. to do;were的时态问题
E. that they will be more conservative than they have been to set dividends--that后they多余; to set错误,应该改为in setting

A.doubling the increase of  正确答案

A. Correct;这里的double是"make twice as great"的意思,也就是使increase/growth
确切的名词来表示the increase of the number of people,所以必须使用修饰语来修
B. That无指代对象,有人说that是指代the number,如果是指代the number的话,是
累赘的,所以that并不指向任何成分;the increase in previous year是指previous year
的增长(这个逻辑doesn’t make sense),而不是在previous year增长,应该用the
increase of the previous year。
C. double应该改为doubling,这样划线成分才能修饰前面整个分句,double as much as
是一个figure,所以不能用double as many as这个结构;即便as much as能成功修
D. Many用法错误,因为the increase不是一个countable quantity(这里the increase可
people,而the number of the people是一个表达数量的数字而不是可数名词,所以
the increase也不能够用many来修饰);twice as many as是同位语修饰词(appositive
twice as many as这个结构,awkward。(见下面知识点补充1);the increase in
previous year错误,"the increase in X" 意为X本身在增加,套用到原句里面不对!
E. Many用法错误,因为the increase不是一个countable quantity(from Manhattan);
twice as many as结构使用错误同上。"the increase of TIME PERIOD"意为某时段的

B.using Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—that has convinced

定多余(and also还有一种情况下是redundant的:both X and also Y);have应该
改为has
D. By using错误同C;and不可以换为as well as,as well as只是一个修饰语,其使mass
mailings与前两项的并列关系改变为从属结构,而且并没有A, B, as well as C的结构;
the use of 表达wordy ; 用了convinced 一般过去时表示convinced 发生在has
E. Which used时态错误,“which used”(一般过去时)不应该出现在“has organized”

C.to be more conservative than they have been in setting dividends

A. 实义动词to set(表达预测,将来时)与系动词were不平行,应该是: to set Div. more
conservatively than they have done.
B. to set与have been不平行,要在been后面加上setting或改为have set以修正平行。
C. Correct;be + adj + in doing something很顺口, e.g. She is very active in posting
questions on CD.;时态也很好:to be表示从现在开始的未来,have been 从过去
D. Expect sb. that搭配错误,只能用expect that或expect sb. to do;were的时态问题
E. 不能用Expect sb. that,同D; to set错误,应该改为in setting

1.(181)The number of people flying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, doubling the increase of the previous year.
A.doubling the increase of
B.doubling that of the increase in
C.double as much as the increase of
D.twice as many as the increase in
E.twice as many as the increase of

why twice as many as ❌
1. as many as 和 increase【uncountable】incompatible
if you say "twice as many", then this construction should be paired with a countable noun.
e.g., twice as many dogs --> "dogs" is a countable noun

if you said "twice as much", then this construction should be paired with an uncountable noun.
e.g., twice as much water --> "water" is an uncountable noun

if the noun in question is already an explicitly numerical quantity, then you should use neither "much" nor "many". instead, you should just use "twice" or "double" by itself.
e.g., twice the increase --> "increase" is an explicitly numerical quantity

these rules are followed pretty closely.
so, for instance:
twice as much water --> correct, since "water" is an uncountable noun (but is not an explicitly numerical quantity)
twice the water... --> incorrect, since water is not a numerical quantity

twice as much as the increase... --> incorrect; redundant
twice the increase... --> correct

2. twice as many as should be used as appositive
because that's an appositive modifier.
appositives must modify some noun that comes IMMEDIATELY before the comma【该点存疑,但是appositive必须modify noun是没错的】

if you're going to say COMMA + "twice as many as...", then that's incorrect unless there's actually a quantity in front of the comma.
e.g.
last year i read 40 books, twice as many as i read in the preceding year
--> correct
last year the number of books i read increased dramatically, twice as many as i read in the preceding year
--> incorrect

by contrast, the -ING FOLLOWED BY A COMMA modifies the entire action of the preceding clause. this is exactly what you want to happen, because the actual rising of the # of people flying first class is what "doubled the increase of...". there's no noun in there that pinpoints this concept, so you have to use a modifier that modifies the entire clause.
usage of同位语appositive modifier

1. "COMMA + ABSTRACT NOUN" can be used to refer back to the WHOLE IDEA of the preceding clause
2. "COMMA + CONCRETE NOUN" is normally used to refer to the preceding noun (much like "which").
3. "COMMA + CONCRETE NOUN" 还可以指代前面句子中的embedded concrete noun
⚠️an example of APPOSITIVE using embedded CONCRETE noun
A group of paleontologists recently announced that a site in Utah has yielded fossils of some of the biggest armoured dinosaurs ever found, fossils that are at least 25 million years older than those of any similar dinosaur type found in North America. (appositive)

increase in V.S. increase of
"the increase in X" means that X itself has increased. therefore, "the increase in the previous year" doesn't make sense, because the implication would be that the previous year itself had increased (what would that possibly mean?).

"the increase of TIME PERIOD", by contrast, means exactly what it should mean in this particular instance.

2.(182)The organic food industry has organized a successful grassroots campaign—using Web sites, public meetings, and also mass mailings—that have convinced the Department of Agriculture to change the proposed federal regulations for organically grown food.
A.using Web sites, public meetings, and also mass mailings—that have convinced
B.using Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—that has convinced
C.by using Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—in convincing
D.by the use of Web sites, public meetings, as well as mass mailings—that convinced
E.which used Web sites, public meetings, and mass mailings—in convincing

1. A, B, and C 排除 AD
2. E which, which modify immediately preceding noun, sounds like campaign itself use website 应该是industry use..

why C ❌

the problem with (c) is NOT grammatical; the grammar of (c) is just fine.
the problem with (c) is that it uses two different transitions incorrectly.

1. if you say "subject + clause + BY VERBing",
then "by VERBing" must explain HOW the main clause occurred.
e.g.
i prepared for the test by reviewing takeaways on the MGMAT forums.
note that the boldface clause describes HOW i prepared for the test.

choice (c) means that using websites, etc. was how the industry organized the campaign -- in other words, they used the websites and public meetings to organize the campaign in the first place. that's an incorrect meaning.

(the campaign ITSELF used these things; the correct modifier in (a) and (b) shows that relationship.)

* if you say "subject + clause + IN VERBing", then subject + clause must be an ACTUAL PART of the action of VERBing.
e.g.
i solved all the problems in OG12 in preparing for the GMAT.
--> notice that solving the problems IS ACTUALLY PART OF preparing for the test.

choice (c) fails here, too, since organizing the campaign (the main clause) is not ACTUALLY PART OF convincing the government

Q: I think the action of organizing the campaign is part of action of convincing the government. It sounds like, in order to convince the government, the industry organize the campaign.

Ron:
note your (correct) use of "in order to"——a phrase that implies that something was done to enable something else to be done subsequently.
in other words, if "in order to ___" means something, then "in ___ing" will mean something totally different (and vice versa). given a specific intended meaning, they're mutually exclusive.

most commonly, one of the two will be nonsense. if both are sensible, their meanings will be substantially different.
I began to telecommute【远程办公】 in order to take care of my aging father.
(makes sense)

*I began to telecommute in taking care of my aging father.
(nonsense——telecommuting is not a part of caring for elders)

I learned a great deal about human adrenergic receptors in order to study the chemistry and effects of drug X.
(makes sense, if the intended meaning is "to prepare for my studies of drug x, i learned a bunch of stuff about those receptors")

I learned a great deal about human adrenergic receptors in studying the chemistry and effects of drug X.
(also makes sense, but with a different meaning: "during my studies, i learned lots of new things about adrenergic receptors")

补充关于doubling的用法问题(还是对固定搭配不熟练):double是"make twice as great"的意思
这里,doubling the increase of the previous year是doing结构引导的伴随状语,表结果!!!
B that of指代Number没有任何必要
C 用double as much as the increase of是同位语结构,这里只能修饰1990 因此错误
D twice as many as,在这里many只能修饰可数名词,而increase是不可数名词,修饰错误,同位语使用错误同C; increase in previous year 永远是错的,只能用increase of
E many同D

A的also导致三个元素不平行,另外have convinced和主语organic food industry不匹配,排掉
D as well as

that引导的从句使用时错误的 补充一下用法,这里是固定搭配:expect sb. that是错误的,只能用expect that或expect sb. to do
A/B/C中,先排除were,这里未划线句子用的是have propelled,这里理应也是接一般完成时态(换句话说,原句就给了hint这句话有两层时间段),另外to do sth.
C这里有固定结构搭配:be+adj+in doing something
B的错误点在于比较结构的不平行,to set和have been是不平行的,应该用to set和have set

2.

In convincing不对,排除C E
D 平行and
3.
A B set 动词和be不能比较,排除

1.
B* 因为觉得as much as和as many as都冗余,然后直觉应该有that。
但是答案是A!A没有任何毛病,B的that of the increase in不对,不知道在说啥。

2.
B*
A的that have convinced不对,应该是that has convinced。
C的by using赘余。
D的as well as不对,by the use of赘余。
Ron说,in convincing也不对。如果要使用subject+clause+in doing这种结构,subject+clause必须是in doing的实际一部分。
E.g.,
i solved all the problems in OG12 in preparing for the GMAT.
--> notice that solving the problems IS ACTUALLY PART OF preparing for the test.

3.
C* expect sb. to do.
A的were不对,应该是did。B也应该是have done或者did,而不是have been。
(不确定该是did还是have done,反正be肯定不对就是了)排除AB,选C。
