128. The following appeared in a memorandum from the human resources department of Diversified Manufacturing.
“Managers at our central office report that their employees tend to be most productive in the days immediately before a vacation. To help counteract our declining market share, we could increase the productivity of our professional staff members, who receive a total of four weeks paid vacation a year, by allowing them to take no more than one week of vacation at a time. They will thus take more vacation breaks during a year and give us more days of maximum productivity, thereby helping to increase our market share.”
还有个可能是 increase in productivity=>increase in market share.
1) do shorter vacational days still have the same effect as the original ones?
2) do employees become more productive because the vacations are rare, after the new policy, the vacations seem more frequent, can their productivity still be increased?
1, does the sum of days of a vacation(a possible factor) influence the employees productivity? If so, employees will not become more productive when they know their coming vatition is no more than 10 days compared with the condition under which they have 40 days.
2,there is maybe no causal relationship between market share and productivity. Even though there is, several days high productivity before vation will not acount for much on the average productivity of a year, and it is long-term high productivity which brings company to high market share, not short-term or days of maximam productivity.
3, More vacation breaks may lower productivity besides enhancing employees' productivities before vacation. And the disadvantage will offset the advantage of more breaks.
