There are a number of factors that will impact your chances of getting into a school like MIT or Stanford. First, you’ll need the basic stats: your GPA is solid & hits their average and you’ll want to be sure your GMAT does as well. The average GMAT at Stanford is close to 740 and at MIT it’s 730; you’ll want to hit or ideally exceed that average. When you hit the average you’ve “checked the box” & if you exceed it it can be a point of differentiation. Test scores & GPA are just one piece of the puzzle though. The specifics of your work experience and what you’ve accomplished there will be critical to the strength of your candidacy. The adcom wants to see applicants who have made a meaningful, quantifiable difference at work. Have you helped your consulting clients drive significant increases in revenue, cut costs, launch profitable new products, etc? That’s the type of impact the adcom wants to see, and they want to see that it’s been directly tied to your actions. In addition to impact the adcom also wants to see demonstrated leadership experience, whether at work or in your extracurriculars. Speaking of which, extracurriculars are an important piece of your application as well. The adcom wants applicants who are making a unique difference in their community & are well rounded people, not just someone pulling long hours at work. Finally, the specifics of your post-MBA goals will be critical to the strength of your application as well. The adcom not only wants to know what you plan to do (your specific short term and long term titles & target firms) but also what you hope to accomplish in those roles and why that is your passion.
