我还是不明白,为什么不是用their指代stores,而是用its指代the chain of retail stores?供货商不应该是stores的供货商吗?怎么是the chain的供货商呢?

麻烦哪位大虾再受累给解释一下吧!谢谢!

我理解chain这里不是直译的连锁的意思，而是连锁机构的意思,类似大商业集团。Longman的解释:

a number of shops, hotels, cinemas etc owned or managed by the same company or person
chain of
a chain of restaurants

而且，语法上To ensure consistently high quality in its merchandise的its已经要求了后面的单数。

The 名词1 + of + 名词2 + 定语从句 + 主句谓语动词
名词1为核心词，主句谓语动词与名词1保持一致

名词1 of 名词2 + that verb
先用逻辑关系判断出that引导的定语从句修饰名词1还是名词2，再判断动词形式

(only/but) one of 复数名词 + that verb（复数）
the (only) one of 复数名词 + that verb（单数）

数词 + 单位词复数 + of + 不可数名词/物质名词 + verb（复数）
例如：several million tons of stone were quarried...

par of/most of/all of/some of/分数或百分数 of/the rest of 名词做主语时，谓语动词由of后的名词决定
a body of/a collection of/an array of/a series of/a set of/a portion of/a group of + 复数名词，谓语动词用单数

a total of + 名词复数，谓语动词用复数
the number of + 名词复数，谓语动词用单数；a number of + 名词复数，谓语动词用复数

新东方规律中说不能。我到现在没看到反例
