看OG上的这道题：

根据答案解释，connected by ... 修饰structures，但曼哈顿中讲过noun modifier必须要挨着其修饰的对象，不能跳跃，那这题是否是个例外呢？

of up to前后都有逗号 是插入语 起到修饰作用 插入语拿掉之后不影响句子的结构 所以拿掉之后你再看connected 其实就是紧跟着structure
另外 没记错的话 曼哈顿说的应该是越近越 不是必须紧邻着 如有错误请指正

曼哈顿上高亮了那句noun modifier必须挨着noun，Ron也强调过这个问题，不过我可以理解你的解释。
但插入语此处也是noun modifier，所以我觉得此处应该把插入语和connected ...合并成一个分句，用and连接。

我大概明白你说的原则了
1.关于noun modifier是否必须挨着修饰词
老版本的曼哈顿确实强调touch原则 第四版是如此 对于noun modifier的位置表述如下
when you see a noun modifier, ask yourself what noun should be modified. Then check to make sure that the modifier is next to what noun. Follow the Touch Rule:
A NOUN and its MODIFIER should TOUCH each other.
第五版没有看过，但是到了第六版（应该是目前最新的一版本），曼哈顿对于noun modifier的位置描述变成了如下：
The practical result is that nouns and noun modifiers must be placed either right next to each other or very
close together. Remember this rule:
Place a NOUN and its MODIFIER as close together as possible-the closer, the better!
注：上述描述所有高亮均为根据曼哈顿原书给出
这是从曼哈顿原书的角度，从另外一个角度，PREP中都有题目noun modifier不是紧挨着修饰的noun作为正确选项的，所以我倾向于认为noun modifier不需要挨着被修饰的名词。
2. 关于句子成分合并
确实可以合并用and链接，但是插入语作为次要信息就变成了一个主要信息，句子层次和表达的句意就发生了改变。

建议还是看最新版本的 我想上传 传不上去 你搜索 曼哈顿 第六版 就能找到 原来有一个CDer发过
