按你说的C，it was a collection...这个it没有指代。前文唯一出现的单数名词就是 European history, 但european history 肯定不可能是 a collection of small city-states，所以C不对。
而A就解决了这个问题，因为第一个greece这个，就成为了it的指代，你可以一下反应过来这里it指的是greece，而且greece是 a collection of small city.....
